XPS2 owners: ever wish you had the 9300 instead?

Thread Starter
This may be a silly question because it is like asking whether one would rather drive a Camry V6 than the Lexus ES 300, but someone here may think that the XPS2 is over rated and that it would be better than to get the 9300 instead of the XPS2.

I just wish that I could throttle down the nVidia when on battery. This things sucks massive amounts of power! It's frustrating that Dell has the GPU locked out. Other than that I love my XPS2. BTW, I have a 9300 sitting in the living room waiting to go back.

Nope, not for a second. Especially at 1920x1200. I cancelled my 9300 order to order an XPS 2 and don't regret it at all. It's a no compromise, full-featured machine which can handle anything you want to do.

I bought the laptop with 2 "had to accomplish" goals in mind.

1) Get rid of desktop clutter/wires.

Any nice notebook would do this. The 9300 certainly whould have fit the bill.

2) Purchase a machine with equal or greater gaming prowess than my current desktop.

My desktop was an AMD 64 machine with a 6800GT OC in it.

The 9300 fell well short of this. The XPS2 exceeds it. That did it for me. I also have plans of setting up a gigabit network for file storage with a simple servcer. I don't believe the 9300 has gigabit lan. It ended up being a 500 dollar difference for a very upgraded video card and gigabit LAN for me. I was sold.

Very upgraded video? Isn't very upgraded like a generational change, not regular vs. ultra (higher clocked) versions of the same card? Even with 4 more pipes, I can't imagine it's more than 20% faster on average...
difference was less than three hundred dollars for me between the 9300 and XPS, so i went with the XPS hoping that one day, battery life could be increased...

My XPS 2 was cheaper than the 9300 I cancelled.

What are all you guys suffering from, the only difference between the XPS and 9300 is the ultra version of the geforce card... What matters anyway..

Not sure what "suffering" you refer too. I think everyone here has made very valid points as to what decided their purchase. Nobody is knocking the 9300. It's a GREAT notebook. I'd be happy with one any day.

I have played with both and prefer the 9300 by far, but thats because I am not a gaming freak!!!

No

The only "real" difference is the 6800 ultra. Yeah the XPS2 chasis looks amazing, much better than Alienware, but the 6800ultra is the only real advantage.

For some people this advantage is good, for you super hard core my-comp-owns-your-comp people.

However the 9300 is still one powerful badass computer.

I'm not a gammer (but might do some just to see it do its stuff lol) I'm getting the XPS 2 because of the Gigabit adapter. Since neither has Firewire 800 (IEEE 1394b) and USB is lousy technology - much slower than even Firewire 400, it's a no-brainer for me. The Ultra is just a bonus. The lights are a waste. Can't imagine anyone over 14 that would actually want them or the panels. I assume it's related to "mine is bigger than yours" insecurity. I'm an IT pro - ergonomics and what's inside are what I care about. I still prefer my black Thinkpads because they don't show discoloration, wear and tear, etc but Dell has the horsepower.

So you wanted to get rid of wires, but are making a wired gigabit network

I dunno, that just made me laugh.

Same here, so I had to go with the XPS-G2.

Some folks gave good answers in my thread about whether the Ultra was worth the extra $500:

Both the 6800 Go and the 6800 Go Ultra are 12 pipe cards.

Only difference is the ram and the clockspeed of the GPU.

...and 1000+ points on 3DMark05.

I think in the end it comes down to what you want. I could have gotten an XPS2 but it was $700 more than my 9300 with the 33% off and I decided it was not worth it.

I think that people with XPS2's should be very happy with their purchases and will enjoy them for a few years to come...
