I have a zv6000 and I want to get an xb2000. from the diagram it looks like some sort of cable plugs into the side of your notebook? Is that cable attached to the base or do I need to buy it separately?

I have a zv6000 on order and bought the xb2000 base. The cable is attached to the expansion base.

i see, so that plugs into the expansion port 2 on the zv6000. Not a very elegant solution but it'll work I guess.

does the dock come with just a drive blank for the removeable hardware or does it have everything but the drive? I'd like to get a huge drive and put it in there if possible.

let me know when you get this in. I would like to know if the ZV6000 requires what they call the "Expansion Base Adapter"
I'm still waiting on my zv6000. The drive dock only has a cover on it. In the reference guide it shows another configuration that has the drive carrier blank. I don't know how you'd get that though. You can put in a different drive in the carrier though. The 160GB hard drive kit comes with the necessary power adapter as well.

160GB xb2000 Hard Drive

The expansion base adaptor is included. The manual lists the zv5000, zx5000, R3000, and nx9100 need to use it. My wife's DV4000 didn't need to use it and looking at the pictures of the zv6000, I don't think it will either. The adapter goes from a bigger connector to a smaller one. If the adapter is used, you lose the following features:

Microphone
IR Receiver
Mute light

Does anyone know if i can rig a hard drive into the xb2000 with out the drive kit? also whats the max disk space for it?

I dont want to pay $200 for a hard drive kit... i would rather spend that $200 on a huge drive...

it appears to use some sort of USB 2 connector.

I was looking at the service manual for the xb2000 and i do think that a 2.5in HDD can be put in. But it almost looks like you need another part that connects to the drive then to the inside of the xb2000... Can you conferm this when you get yours...

Yes, there is a carrier/bracket/tray whatever you want to call it that is needed to connect into the xb2000. I don't think this is available without ordering the 160gb hard drive kit. The kit also has the power supply that is needed to power the drive. The power supply used to power the xb2000 is the one for your laptop hence, there are three different power connectors depending on which PS you have, and I'm guessing it wouldn't provide enough power for both the laptop and the hard drive. There shouldn't be a max disk space, since it acts just like a normal external hard drive. You laptop just connects to it via the Expansion Port 2 connection instead of via a USB/firewire cable. Here's some pics.

thanks for the reply. Its a shame they went out of their way to make the HD kit so proprietary. What is even worse is how you have to run a second power supply for it
post #12 of 20
Well maybe i buy the HDD kit and put the 160GB in my laptop, (Wonder How Fast It Is And If That Would Work)... Then i get another huge drive for the xb2000... Humm just a thought (If anyone trys that let me know)...

i'm not even aware of a 160g 3.5 in drive. I know they make 100G
post #16 of 20
you can get 400+GB 3.5in Drives...

2.5in on the other hand for laptops I seen 100GB all the time but never a 160GB
post #17 of 20
Yes, the 3.5" drives are standard desktop drives and the 2.5" are laptop drives.

SATA or IDE or?

hey all, what type connection will the hard drive require? SATA or IDE? I know it is a 3.5" drive. Seems like the connection the the docking station is one thing, but what types of HDDs will go in there?

They are IDE hard drives, but with out the hard drive enclosure for the hard drive you wont be able to make a connection... Also It only works with 160GB for some reason...

So basically you have to buy the hard drive/enclosure for it for about $180 i think i paid...
