Creating laptop image to 60Gb 7200 drive

Hi,

I have a Dell 9300 with a 40Gb hard drive
I have a USB2.0 hard disc enclosure
I have 2 spare laptop hard discs (40Gb 4200 rpm and 60Gb 7200 rpm)

I've used Acronis true image in the past and have been able to successfully create a new image to the 40Gb hard drive using the USB enclosure

However I am having problems with the 60Gb hard drive
It seems as though there is not enough power to the USB enclosure when the 60Gb drive is inserted i.e Windows doesn't even recognize it as a hard disc at all

The enclosure itself was a cheap one which I purchased from Newegg.com. It also has 2 USB connections and supposedly the two cables when connected up to the laptop supply sufficient power to drive the enclosure without a power supply

However I tried both connections at the same time and the hard disc inside the enclosure is still not recognized. So I can' backup the 40Gb to my 60Gb 7200rpm drive

Has anyone noticed this also for faster hard drives and has a solution ?

The only thing I can think of to do is to just buy another enclosure that includes a power supply. But I don't know if that will solve the problem. I don't want to have to mess around with buying something, and returning it, if it doesn't work

So if someone knows of a reasonably cheap enclosure that definitely works with a power hungry hard disc, and can show me a link, that will be great

Or if there's another solution let me know

Thanks
Richard

I guess my first question would be why are you using the slow 40G in the laptop and saving your fastest drive....your 7200 RPM 60G for a USB enclosure?

If I was you, I would put the 60G in your laptop and use it where it would help you the most because you are simply wasting your 7200 RPM spindle speed in the enclosure.

newguru I think he wants to ghost his old drive to his new 7k60 so he wouldn't have to reinstall windows. ok firstly when you connect it to the laptop are the any lights on the enclosure on? go to start, control panel, (switch to classic view) administrative tools, computer management, click on disk management and you should see 2 disks, one that is your 40gb primary hard drive and the other should say unallocated space, click on it or something and a wizard should pop up taking you step by step on how you want it setup

How low can we go on a hdd in a USB2/firewire enclosure without compromising perfomance? 5200rpm? 4200rpm?

Yes, trying to Ghost the 40Gb to the faster 60Gb

Hi,

Yes I'm trying to Ghost or image the 40Gb to the 60Gb 7200rpm drive and use the 60Gb in my laptop. Unfortunately I don't see the 60Gb as a hard disc in Windows XP in file manager. It whirrs away on bootup in the enclosure, but never quite manages to be seen in XP.

The drive I've confirmed is still working i.e I've been able to format it in the past and put in my Dell 9300

The enclosure is also working i.e I'm able to out in a different 40Gb drive and I can get TrueImage to create an image from my 9300 to this new drive, so I know that the enclosure is ok for the 40Gb drive

I'm just thinking that there's not enough power in that enclosure, and I really need to buy another enclosure that has a power supply, instead of just operating on power from the USB ports

I'm sure that other people on this forum have successfully imaged to a faster IBM 60Gb 7200 rpm drive, without issue, and I wonder what kind of setup, hardware and software wise, they've tried

Any help appreciated. I want to use that fast drive in my 9300

Thanks
Richard

Thread bump... its old but I cant help it. For a one time process this should work (assuming its power related):

Run one USB cable from the laptop and the other to a desktop that isnt booted to the OS.

The above would assume you have another machine. If you dont most any powered HUB will give you the voltage you need (cheap too!)

Couldn't you just put the 60 GB 7200 rpm drive in the laptop and put the 40 GB into the enclosure? You should even be able to boot from the external drive. This seems like it would be the simplest solution.
