would a new motherboard be needed for low latency DDR2??

I keep hearing the talk about how ddr2 has a high latency. But my question is if they come out with chips that have a lower latency would it work in current models that are using ddr2? or would we need newer laptops?

No...they would be on the same board.

As long it is on a DD2 platform, it will work on the same notebook you ahve now that support DDR2. If it is faster in terms of Mhz, yes it will work. But iwll it be able to utilize the speed is a different question.

yup, it should be able to run at a lower latency, but then thats all configured in the bios and your mobo bios might not support changing of timings.

i thought it was down to the fsb of the cpu, that determins what ram it could use?

the FSB of the cou determine what speed you could use your memory at. However if your memory exceed that speed, it will only support up to the speed of the FSB, not being able to utilize faster than.
