For those, like me, who prefer to flash their BIOS outside of the Windows environment in DOS I have provided the following bootable CD .iso which can flash up to this latest A03 BIOS: http://images.lunarpages.com//uxga/d...s/700m_A03.zip

Worth updating from A02?

Doesn't look like much of a fix:

"1. Update the PXE Boot to v2.0.6 to fix the issue "Cannot obtain the DHCP connection".
2. Change the error message when users attempt to use the DOS flash utility under Windows."

Floppy Flashing

I'm a floppy man myself. However, for some reason dell does not provide a floppy version of the bios flash file for my system (others as well I suppose but does for the 700m). Here is what you do if you're in the same situation and want to flash using a floppy:

1. Get the BIOS file dell provides (which does not contain bootable files)

2. Get a boot disk file small enough to fit on the floppy disk and still leave space for the BIOS file. Here is a good one:
http://download.sudhian.com/faq/kt7/...c/drdflash.exe

3. Create a boot diskette from the file in step 2.

4. Copy over the downloaded BIOS file to the floppy disk you created (there should be enough space for it)

5. Boot from it and on the command promt type in the bios file name (e.g., i600mA16.exe) to start the flashing process.

somms and I..a one-two punch

Hm... never knew you could flash bios from windows. Any drawbacks?

Wish they would put a OSD for volume in the bios.

Only when the psuedo-Windows flash fails and turns your notebook into an overpriced paperweight.

Some people (or somms' people) don't like to do things like this in windows because of it's reputation for crashing, freezing, bugging. And since flashing a BIOS is a sensitive process that could potentially render your system useless if interrupted, it only makes sense to do this from the most stable environment.

And now I see somms beat me to it.

Ah thanks for the input, I'll go with a CD when I need to update.

live dangerously...i've flashed both my 700m's up to a03 without frying it yet using the windows executable bios flash utility.

Does anyone know how does Dell discover these problems? What is the process. Who submits problems to be fixed. If the end users, how do you submit request for a bug to be fixed, a feature to be added?

people like somms gets paid to report stuff like that to them.

I have a desktop, Asus mobo and have always flashed in windows... no problem yet. Let me knock on wood, besides if it is under warranty you can call tech support and ask them to walk you through it and if it fails, you can always blame them... and get a new mobo or system exchange with the latest bios... not being tricky, just in case you don't know how to do it and need a holding hand.

I think on a desktop, a failed bios flash is easier to fix because as I recall they have a replacable BIOS chip. On notebook mobo's the bios chip is not. Somms? help?

So is this A03 worth the jump from A02?

i'm thinking if you are getting some wireless drops and difficulty connecting, the DHCP problem A03 is supposed to fix may be worth the install.

it doesn't take much effort, so why not.

i don't see any problems with it so far

There is also a new update for the Notebook System Software as well as graphics driver (graphics driver is still lower version than intel site thogh)

can someone give me instructions on how to burn a bootable CD using the .iso file?

Thanks
The ISO file already has a boot sector in it. Just burn it as is with your favorite program.

Is anyone else noticing that the screen brightness no longer increases when you plug into AC power with BIOS A03? My 700m has stopped increasing the brightness when you plug into AC power, and I think it happened when I flashed to A03. Are other people seeing the same behavior?
If the brightness is already on max when running on battery, it won't increase if you plug in the charger. If the lumination settings are below max then the brightness goes up to max when you plug in the AC (as it did with the older bios).
