Please see the specs in the NEWS SECTION

Where are the pictures? ESPECIALLY of a TOUCH-SCREEN unit!! Does the keyboard flip back behind the screen?

This sounds pretty sweet! Can't wait for the 3D gaming experience (not that you can do much with VIA's Antar chip) with PEN computing... I can just imagine all the holes and cracks 'cause some b00b was trying to nail that T72 or shoot down that F-16...

EDIT: holy cow I just realized there is NO FIREWIRE on this thing... NEXT!

Yes, it swivels and is touch screen, but notice it has no media drives to load an OS =). So it looks like it will have to be sold with an OS, but I think they're going to be offering it with WriteNote.

Here's a direct link about it:

Couldn't you use a USB external drive to load an OS?

When will someone offer a real computer in the Tablet format. They are always just winkie little toys with the only thing extreme being the limitations. Limited power, limited graphics, limited memory, limited ports. If the industry really wants Tablets to take off, they are going to have to offer something that can compete with regular laptops ala the 8xxx, 5xxx and 4xxx series. Something with real guts, a P4 with HT and a sizable bus, top of the line graphics, etc, etc, etc.

Its the same with the wearable computer equipment, there's nothing better than a P3, presumably someone into wearing their computer, integrating it totally into their lifestyle, would want cutting edge, not 3 year old tech.

I guess there's just no vision of what could be. A tablet that rivals an 8890, indeed, blows it away. The technology is there, it's on the shelf already, just needs someone to take the bull by the horms and tango, baby, tango!!!

See, these tablet pcs fits PERFECTLY in my scheme. I'm going to college next year, and I will definitely take along my 8890. However, the 8890 is probably too bulky to take along comfortably into class (in addition to the inability to find plugs). Hence, the 8890 will stay at home, and will come along only when I REALLY need the power. For everday typing/note taking, the 2880 that I may get will definitely fill in the niche.

You know, in practicallity, if they could, they would. Take a look at the parts in our 5680/8890s. The heatsinks for our processors alone are massive. The CD takes alot of space. The 9600 also takes up room, and puts out lots of heat. SO, right now, our laptops can barely keep themselves cool.. how would u expect a tablet sized machine to do that? Even better, how would u power it?

Is a notepad too hard? I'm kidding of course. My handwriting is absolutely terrible and I hear those things have pretty nice handwriting recognition.

Would sure help when I'm off to college and taking lots of notes to be able to read them.

Via 1GHz?

Yikes, isn't that CPU about equal to a PIII, if we're lucky?
I did a little research and found out the Antaur is Via's attempt to compete with the Centrino. It does about 11watts and can power down to 50% of that for power savings. The kicker is, it costs 1/3 of a Centrino. But... The release of this chip will come just before Intel releases the Centrino II specs and the Dothan Pentium M chip at 2GHz. I think this chip may find its way into mobile devices but not many laptops...

This laptop has been advertised in computer shopper for a few months at least. If I had a scanner I'd scan pics but sorry.
look what more can you expect from a tablet? I mean this machine will be sick, and prolly not cost too much more than a regular sized laptop. But anyway, these machines are designed for
1. word processing
2. spreadsheets
3. internet

you are not going to be playing heavy games on it, so the need for anything more that a 1 ghz is unnecessary and is gonna cost you. the idea is sweet, and the screen i bet is bomber.

the 32 mb shared video, i think, should be enough for all that, and even slide show presentations with animation and video.

there you go.

Pricing=very low... around $1K.
That kind of pricing and spec make this the ideal machine to get those people in your life who just want to WP and browse the web etc. Mums - Granparents - student who want a nice thing for lectures.

I say rock on the tablet - they arent for all but they are very good for some

Like those little e-mail-only machine-things they had in the mid 90's were supposed to target?

I think the "grandparent's" target audience is no more. Either they are wired or they're not.

Still, if someone could hook my TiVO controls / program listing to a tablet, that'd be sweet. It could be done, but there's too much hassle for the average joe to do it.

I think you're missing my point, all the limitations you list come from the decision to make Tablets essentially useless. Like having a Pickup that seats one person, is rated at a 1/4 ton, has only a 4' long by 32" wide bed and only a 50 hp engine, but it gets really great mileage. Yeah, so does a wheelbarrow and it nearly meets the rest of those criteria.

What I am looking for is the Tablet pardigm, a machine you can handwrite on, that has a built in camera, etc. but can also do the heavy lifting. Who says it has to be 3/4" thick? I can live with a little extra thickness. Basically, I'd like a Tablet LCD on an 8890 with the Hot Swap Smart Bays of a 56xx. I guess you might call it a DeskPad?

A flame thrower would be a nice addition too, but I can compromise on that.

And, yeah, Myrkat, you got that right about those funky net access machines. I don't know if that market is completely dead yet, but its dying out fast. As you say, either you're wired or you're not.
I would say that you guys are wired or you are not. There are still HUGE numbers of people out there that arent wired. I think hacking the tablet pc would be a lovely exersise as well.

What we meant by "not being wired" is those folkes probably have no interest / need to be wired if they are not wired by now.

Sure, there are tons of 'em out there, but do they WANT to be wired? Most people have tried to set their grandparents/parents up with technology and it either works out or it doesn't.

That's all,

OW! You propose carrying the 8890 like a tablet??!?! I tried carrying the 8890 with one arm once. Not only did I nearly drop it, it killed my arm for the rest of the day. If you want a tablet, it'll be for note taking and presentations. Something fairly standard, not high speed or anything. That kinda what I'd want from a college laptop. I'll bring the 8890 along for when I need its capabilites, everything else the tablet will do. I can draw diagrams in my notes, and I can also type up lectures notes. It's the perfect college notebook.

Here it is at Sager:

And, only $995! Hefty config brings it to $1500. All drives are external and optional. Looks cool though.
