7700 is roasting my left hand :(

As much as I love my 7700 I must say, the left hand side below the keyboard area is toasting my wrist and hand like no other. I play mmorpg's and FPS hours at a time and during these times is when things get hot. I contacted Alienware about the problem and I pretty much go no solution to the problem. I know some of you have gone as far as using Artic Silver, but I dont want to take that chance of voiding my warranty. What would you guys suggest that I do? Right now Im using a cut peice of a mouse pad that is lying between my wrist/palm and the surface. Great computer but a poorly designed case. I dont think I would have located heated components beneath an area where someone could actually feel the heat. I would have placed it towards the back somewhere.

Maybe you can try wearing an insulated glove while gaming?

Pretty good, stays at a comfortable temperature. Of course the 6800 Go Ultra heats up pretty good but fortunately Dell stuck the card in the back right corner so its not a problem. BTW have you considered getting an external keyboard? Would make things a lot easier for ya when you're gaming on that thing.

I used AS5 on the gpu cooler, it's cooler, but not perfect.

My system is at 60degree at full play.

I can't belive you haven't thought of this yet....why don't you get and external keyboard and mouse. I acutlaly had an extra set...but for gaming i've been using the nostromo pad, it works really great.

I got a bunch of Logitech Mx Duo's. Probably I don't have a good desk to set the whole thing up. Plus I travel with the beast a lot.

Ive never used an external keyboard on my laptops and plus I'm in the military so Ive learned to use the laptop keyboard and actually prefer it over a standard keyboard now. I do however find it messed up that I have to find alternative means of handling the heating issue all because the design is screwed up. Its a problem and we all know its a problem, wether or not some of can overlook the issue Alienware should be addressing the problem with a solution. I've considered sending this Notebook back because it is that bad for me.

Well if it bothers you that much, have you considered alternative notebooks like the Dell Inspiron 9300 or XPS 2? Neither gets uncomfortable while gaming. The 9300 is about the same in performance compared to the 9860 and the XPS 2 is a good deal faster. Not trying to endorse what I have or anything just offering you alternatives if you're thinking about them. You'd probably end up saving about $500-$1000 as well.

I have no beef with DeLL and yes I have considered the XPS2, especially after you told me that the vid card is at the rear and there is no heating issues. I remember DeLL offered a 1 time video card upgrade for there XPS when it was first released. What is DeLLs policy now as far as upgrades go?

Have you tried one of those Kingwin Ultracools? Hell, I haven't even ordered my 7700 yet but from reading all the posts on NBF about the heat issue I'm going to make damn sure I've got one of those coolers before the lappy arrives.

Why don't you reassign the control keys to, say, the right-hand side of the keyboard? I have the same issue while playing battlefield vietnam but I have learned to keep my palm not resting on the palm rest but just hover it above, I have a little basket thing I rest my hand on instead to the left of the laptop. but my hands are big so I don't have to have them right on the machine.

dell doesn't offer upgrades as an incentive to buy their computers, but upgrades are available nonetheless. probably saves them from all the whining you hear from other laptop owners.... "XXXXX brand promised us upgrades and now we're not getting any." blah blah blah.

but as part of the xps package, in the event an upgrade is available, they waive the home installation fee. but you do not receive a credit/trade-in on your existing video card. this has been my experience with them upgrading the m9700 to the m9800 in my old i9100

Whats interesting about this, you knew that there were going to be desktop parts in itty bitty living space, You knew prior to buying this machine that it runs hot, but you still bought it anyway. I would either say re-map or get a keyboard or a nostromo..

Nah, it's an unfortunate design decision on Clevo's part. For me, it's a little irritating to work in bed, with my new 7700 resting on my lap above the covers. The exhaust vent is situated just so the exhaust flow roasts my whole left side.

Sure, we all know it's a "Desktop Replacement" and sacrifices have to be made.. but it's still in a laptop form factor, and should be usable as a laptop, in typical laptop usage scenarios.

Other than that, my 7700 is a sweet machine, and I'm very happy with it.

Any sacrifice should not be an option. A lappy with such crazy specs that we flatten our wallets for does not have to have that kind of dumb exhaust system in its stomach. It's the problem with the engineering though. All in all, the lappy is poorly designed. "Desktop replacement" is just an fancy name they came up with in order to attempt for the excuses.
I mean the design solely...
