you could try PC Torque or Sager for one.

The performance drop is noticable.
Haven't done any real benchmarks just did a boot from the 3rd drive and it is painful relative to the first and second bays.

Wow, I wouldn't have expected that. Do you know why?

Interface speed, drive buffers, or DMA setting? The DMA setting can make a 7 fold plus difference on HDD access speeds (at least that is the case for a desktop running Linux).

I have not had time to figure out why.
Maybe I just forgot how it used to work given I now have full on RAID 0 working
G-Omaha brings up a good point with DMA settings etc.
Hadn't thought of that. Thanks dude.
The drive is sharing the same bus as the CDROM - don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I will let you know though.

Just did a quick check of the schematics on this,
The difference is that the 3rd hdd goes via the ICH3 hdd interface whereas the other two disks go via the Promise controller which connects to the PCI bus.

It could be a function of the throughput of the hardware and/or the driver.

powernotebooks.com you can get one for 30.00.. comes with all the parts you need.. NO performance drop.. the only thing is that i dont have a 7200rpm in that slot, but i dont boot off it, its only for mass video editing and such..works great.

Thanks for that info romad10.
Interesting you didn't notice any performance hit.
I found when booting from it that it was noticably slower than the main disk.
