Ya I wasn't too pleased to see the PCMCIA port and audio outs on the right side either but if you route your cables correctly, it isn't that big of a deal and won't bother you much.
There is no way to "fix" that issue. You either deal with it or send it back.
What bothers me more is having a rubber foot on the battery itself. So if you decide to leave the battery out, the laptop tends to wobble a bit. I'm sure manufacturing would save a lot by NOT including a rubber foot on the battery. Why not put it on the very corner of the laptop case? Genius engineers.

They probably didn't realize that people were stupid enough to think leaving the battery out preserves it in any way.
