loud fan noise on 8890

Hi, I just got my laptop on monday and I am quite concerned with the fan volumn. It is constanly on and very loud and the pitch is sort of on the high side. I am primarly using this for audio recording applications, and need my laptop to be generally as quite as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Can other 8890 user please comment on the fan noise?

Any suggestion would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks so much

Chris

I have several desktops running and can barely hear my 8890 fan. Occassionally if I am working it really hard I get a bit of low level noise but nothing like your description.

When I got my 8890, the fan hardly ran at all & it sounds nothing like you describe, although it is definitely noticeable in a quiet room.

I recently added a 2nd hard drive which caused the fan to run a LOT more(it seems to run most of the time now), but it is not a high pitched sound at all & other than heating up my mouse hand does not really bother me.

i am in the same boat. My fan is loud. and it whistles most of the time. when it is off the 'top is quiet as a fox. when gaming the fan is constantly on. In class i get flushed whenever the fan turns on, because it is apparent to everyone within a 15 foot radius of me! even over the professors microphoned voice.

one thing i have tried is down clocking in the bios. that runs the cpu at a slower speed, something you may not need as much for studio editing.

btw mine is 8890 2.8

I would say that hearing the fans from 15' away is not normal, unless you're in a really quiet place and the machine is really driving. On my 8886, I rarely notice the fans unless its really quiet or I am driving the machine hard. Adding a second hard drive should cause the fans to run more, but not all that much more, after all, the major heat sources are the CPU and the GPU and then the RAM and then the HDDs.

If you've got a whistling noise, there may be something obstructing the flow or something the blades could be rubbing on something while they spin. Either way, not good overall, though not an emergency either.

The first thing to try would be a can of air to blow out the cooling channels. If that doesn't work, crack it open, carefully, very carefully, and take a look at the channels, the blades and the fan housing. Use a soft cloth (a 3M cleaning cloth works really well for this and most other cleaning purposes, including the screen, but be sure to make sure the cloth is clean, ie - freshly laundered) to wipe down the blades and other surfaces.

Well, I'm lucky: my school has really loud nasty fan vents, so the fan vents normally drown out all noise from my laptop. I'm the only one that knows when the laptop fan turns on by the sudden increase of heat in the general area.

Yes, the fan is loud in a quiet area. However, in any sort of noise, it's immediately drowned out. Let's just say that if I bring my desktop, even the classrooms around mine would know when I turn it on. But not this quiet laptop. When the fans are off, it's AMAZING. It beats out an IBM Thinkpad easily, even with two hard drives spinning as opposed to one!

So it's the dual hard drives that make the fan run a lot... I posted an older thread about how often my fan runs. Looks like it's not really a problem... That's good to know.

When your computer first boots the fan should be on high. After the BIOSvhas loaded, the fan should quiet down (assuming the computer is cold). If it doesn't there is a problem. I had this happen to me, and mine was fixed by resetting the BIOS (or CMOS or whatever you call them) parameters to default.
