Initial Thoughts about my Sager 8886

I've had the laptop for about 2 days and I'm slowly getting used to it. I just have some comments and questions about this really cool laptop.

First of all, I'd like to thank Adam for everything he did, your company rules!

what's sick is that my screen has like no defects whatsoever, so im glad i dont have to return it =P

this laptop is a beast....its huge, i still cant believe how big it is...it feels like a regular computer to me.. the shock that its a laptop hasnt hit me yet..

I just played some games and ran some demos, and everything runs so smooth, its just unfair that my old computer cant do it..

I am concerned with some stuff tho... for instance...before i updated the tv studio program, i tried watchin some cable (withouth the cable box) and i couldnt watch any channels but channel 5...and then only in black and white!...ill try again to see if the update fixed this problem..

I am afraid of o'cin the graphics card, because i dont want to blow it, but because of the heat, i wonder of underclocking it will produce less heat... the less the better for me.

Like another person ive read about, i do feel some heat from the keys and the palm rests after a while, but im starting to get used to it.. =p

whats really cool is that, i leave the comps down in the cold basement, just because its better to be there in the summer, and plus, the cable modems down there, so if i wanna go online its down there...oh yea what i was saying was...i use an external mouse and cuz the heat blows out the vent every once in a while, i get a nice blast of heat, which keeps my hands nice and warm =P

If you saw my setup, i have a portable heater at my feet and its on all the time, so muahahah

Another thing, with the keyboard, the enterkey seems to stick up in the top left side...i wonder if any of you have this same oddness..

When hold the scroll button to hold with my external mouse, i do see that the picture gets a little bit darker and becomes so faded and such but returns to its fullness once i stop scrolling...but thats supposed to be like that i think...

im really confused with all these buttons...lol what does Fn mean?.....hey what about that fingerprint verification spot? is anything there now? or is it just there for later?
the mp3 player is funky....if i just rapidly push in and take out it, it loses funtionality..

Do you think i can place anything in the extra bay, mine is empty...i wanna put something weird in, like an antenna!

The backpacks rock, its soo cool, and its the perfect fit!

how long does the battery charge for?

How do you set up the hotkeys? i dont seem to be able to remember..

is there anything but powerstrip that can oc or underclock anything?

hahah the remote owns at turning off and on my computer....

lol, yeah, the remote is sweet.
As for underclocking, there's no need to because these systems are engineered to take it rough it appears. I tried to create heat issues with the 2.8GHZ and could never get it to throttle down.

To set up the hotkeys, you'll have to install the software off the CD and follow the steps for programming the hot keys. I can't remember what page in the manual for the 8886, but the 5660, it's on 2-20.
Fn is the function key and is used for the following:

Fn+F3= turn audio on/off
Fn+F4= Toggle between suspend/resume state
Fn+F5= Decrease audio volume
Fn+F6= Increase audio volume
Fn+F7= Toggle between CRT/LCD/LCD and CRT
Fn+F8= Decrease LCD brightness
Fn+F9= Increase LCD brightness
Fn+Num Lk= Enable Number lock
Fn+Scr Lk= Enable Scroll lock

The finger print scanner location is for future use, but it doesn't appear they will be adding the option any time soon if at all.

The keyboard keys should not be sticking and the keyboard can be replaced if you're having a problem with that. We've had 1 defective keyboard so far (on a 5660).

Powerstrip is the only program that I have used for overclocking. I don't know of any other gui interface programs for overclocking that will work with this system.

The battery takes a long time to charge if you have the system running while it's charging.

Glad you like the backpack, a lot of people are amazed by the quality of it.

I know I played hit and miss with the order of your comments/questions =) As for the fading from scrolling, I'm not sure, you may want to try different video drivers or reinstalling them.

yeah, you're one of the lucky few now

these computers rock.

Adam, you're the best man, I am SO glad i got a chance to get my computer from you.

as for heat issues, i have really put this laptop through its pases in the last month and havn't had ANY heat related issues. Like you said the keyboard will get warm after heavy use, so I too have a new hand warmer for the winter.

as for the tv software, try re-installing, i had a few installation related issues, but since i did a fresh install TV studio and a couple other odds-and-ends work great...just make sure you follow adams protocol list as to th e order to install drivers!

also, THANKS ADAM, I am so glad i went w/ your company!

The keys get warm and so do the wrist rests? WOW, my 8880V stays nice and cool everywhere except right under the CPU.

Is it just warm or worse?
Just warm, lol. If it got worse, I don't think Sager would be so respected by the forum members :-) The system stability also attests to this.

TLM, my enter key is slightly uplifted on the left side also. you're not the only one, but i don't think it is "broken" ... don't have a digicam to take a pic of it, but i know what you're talking about..

did you get the targus backpack?

Thanks for ruining my day!! I have been anticipating my tax return to buy the 8886 and now to find out I cant get it. I work for the US Army in Germany and unlesss it is shipped USPS I must fight with the German customs over the duty and sales taxes. It too me almost three weeks to get four CDs from their grungy hands last time I used FedEx. Guess Im gettin a DELL DUDE!!

? Lol, to whom are you referring? Sorry to hear that you can't get the 8886... I bet you could make special arrangements with PCTorque to get it shipped to you via USPS. Have you tried talking to him?
