So they are out there

I wonder what the minimum number would be for Seagate to sell them as OEM to a person 100 or 1000 perhaps.

Heck I don't think it would be too hard to sell them and if you were being kind (to the community of users out there) you could sell them with only a small markup to cover costs etc and a small profit (10% ?), so perhaps it might be worth looking into.

Any thoughts on the matter. perhaps we should all get together and approach Seagate.....
NO WAY..seagate is just pissing me off damn it. i refuse to buy one from them now. i'll just wait for another company to make it.

ok, so i'll probably just quietly buy it

Probably not less than 10,000 units.

OK guys, I have some hot news for you!

I just bought the Seagate 80GB 7200rpm hard drive (ST980825A) for $200 from ebay!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

The seller seems to be very reliable and seems to have a good connection to Seagate since he also sold the 100gb version a week ago:

I asked him if he had some more of these bad guys but he said that the 80gb version was the only 7200 model, "maybe later". So I decided to go with the 80gb baby. I'm so excited!!

huh, let us know how it turns out. I'm going to wait awhile, at least till the 100gigs are more affordable and maybe the 120s, as I just got my 60 and an 80 would be a silly upgrade in my mind for me.

Billy, I agree, it's a lot of money considering the fact that you get a 5400rpm 80gb drive for under $150. But I think you know what I'm talking about when I say that we're all crazy about our lappies.

yeah, that's true, otherwise i wouldn't have bought 2GB ram for my laptop. but i still believe that 100GB will be had for around $160-$170 shortly after they come out.

Ladies and gentlemen, I got my new hard drive

Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST980825A 80gb@7200rpm for my Dell 700m. Just formatted it and installed a clean fresh Windows XP system with all the latest drivers. First impressions: Everything is faster - maybe because of the re-install. Downloaded Sandra2005 and tested the drive:

KABOOOOOM!!! This drive is freakin' FAST! And the best thing: It is also deadly silent! No clicking (got used to it with my Hitachi), no buzzing. WOW! I'm impressed. Let's see how it will behave in everyday life...

The 7K100 is listed... I knew it

It's amazing what people will do/pay to have the latest and greatest, even though the performance difference between a 5400 and 7200 will probably be unnoticeable in normal applications outside of benchmark results.

Well, yeoman, the performance difference is noticeable even when doing general things like startup, copying files, dealing with a large amount of data, installing software etc. The general response time after executing an application seems to be faster, too.

Personally, I needed the faster speed since I do a lot of video capturing and editing. So I was willing to pay +$50 over the standard price of a 80gb drive with 5400rpm to get a guy with 7200rpm. I'm not dying to have the latest and best. I am just enthusiastic about it and I love to share my joy with other people...
