Overview:

Well, I received this laptop from futureshop as a warranty replacement for a Compaq 915CA I had. Well to be honest, they had given me a Compaq 3470US, but I wanted something portable and opted to pay the difference for this one. I wanted something light. The price difference wasn’t much, so I was willing to pay the $300 Canadian difference.

Design:

I wont talk to much about this, but the pictures speak for themselves. It is a very sleek and great looking notebook. Some people that I know, when buying things, besides specs, they also look for design. Well I have to admit that I am one of these people. I am very picky about design, and this notebook wins my vote. It is a very light notebook, even with the battery in. The only concern I had was of the material used to build this notebook. I believe its all plastic of some sort. Though it seems very durable and not flexible like other notebooks I saw at futureshop.

Screen:

This is a BrightView display 15.4” WXGA. Since I am not a gamer, the screen was not a concern for me. This screen has the glossy reflective material. On start up during the boot process, you could physically see yourself on the notebook. I had no dead pixels so this was an added plus, but futureshop is very good with this and accepts returns even with one dead pixel! This screen, and personally this feature I like, is not as bright as the Sony X-Brite screen but they are just as good. I think personally this is a good thing because it is better on battery life.

Speakers:

Are you sure these are laptop speakers? These speakers are really great. Very loud and clear. Not as loud as the JBL speakers on the Compaq models but they are still great. I prefer them over my Acer 8104.

Graphics:

Are you looking for a notebook that you can game? Well step aside because this isn’t the one you want. Unless you don’t care about playing your games at the lowest levels possible. I ran 3dmark 2001 and scored around 3770 points. Remind you that 3dmark 2001 counts cpu power as well. Though for everything else I haven’t found any other problems. Since I have my desktop computer for gaming and a ps2 this didn’t bother me at all.

Noise:

What noise? This notebook is very silent. When used with battery the fans hardly come on if at all. You can hear a very very slight hum, but that is when the room is completely silent. The fan do come on though when then power bar is in use. The fans get loud but not to loud like other laptops I have heard.

Keyboard:

In this portion I will compare the keyboard to the Acer 8104. I personally like the Acer keyboard a lot better. It is more responsive with less force. This one seems a bit more tough.

Track Pad:

I am not very found of it. It is not a very smooth surface like the Acer 8104 or the older Compaq 915CA that I owned. I do not like the scroller that HP uses in these new laptops. At times it doesn’t respond, and you have to use more force or something. I still haven’t figured this part out.

Dvd Writer:

Well it does get loud when loading, but when burning its not that loud. I enjoy that fact that its an NEC in the laptop that I have. It is a dvd writer so I can’t really say much about it. It gets the job done.

QuickPlay:

I like this feature that HP added in this laptop. It includes a remote and headphones. The remote is a bit small, and I have big hands so pressing the keys was a bit difficult, but I got over it. When not in use you can slide the remote controller inside the pcmcia card slot. QuickPlay is a neat feature to have. You do not need to have the computer on to take advantage of this. You just press the power button on the remote controller and it starts up the computer. You can either use it for music, or movies. It loads up the QuickPlay software and your all good to go.

Battery Life:

I was a bit afraid to get another BrightView display after I had owned a Sony FS50 laptop for a week. The battery life on the Sony was horrible. I was expecting much, but I was surprised. With screen brightness at the lowest level, and wifi on I got about 3hours and 57minutes. I have yet to test a dvd as I do not travel and watch movies on a laptop that often.

Conclusion:

Would I recommend this laptop to anyone? Yes I would. If you’re not a gamer that is. It is affordable, and comes with the lasted Intel Sonoma platform. Though it does not come with DDR2 memory, but really there isn’t much of an advantage with it anyway from reviews that I have read, that is. It is a very sleek notebook, light way, and is packed with features. I personally couldn’t ask for more. The screen is great, the speakers are great, even the blue LED’s that it has look nice. If you are in the market for an affordable laptop for basic things, and more, take a look at the HP DV4040 or even the DV4030.

Hi, really nice review m8!. Im considering to buy the hp pavillion dv4050EA (Centrino 1.6, 1024ram, 15,4 tft, 80gb hdd, ...). I can get it for 1299€, here in Madrid, with 2 years warranty.

I would give it normal use, such as taking it away at holidays, watching movies, etc, but i would give it normally too much uptime (probably 24h a day), is it really silent for having it running while you are sleeping?

How are movies seen in the 16:9 screen?

Regards

Ordered mine!

Hey man thanx for the review, I like what I see on your pictures. I ordered my DV4040US from circuit city and should be arriving soon. Got a nice deal, 1350 after rebates... I think I´ll post some more pictures. Thanx again man!

Bought mine on 5/14 at Best Buy. After rebate it comes out to about $1300 or so. The monitor is beautiful, the remote is cool, and the HD xvid tv shows I have look absolutely gorgeous. I hope I feel this good about my purchase in a few weeks.

hey

I would like to ask a few questions about the laptop : 1. When you press on the lcd case does it make distortions ? 2. Is it hard to see the screen in a bright lit room? 3. Is the laptop durable and did the gray paint rub off from the laptop

oh yea one more thing , the battery results that you posted are they for a 6 cell battery ?

Nice review I picked one for 1200 bucks shipped I like it, I had a dell xps laptop before but hated that it was so heavy and a battery hog. I love how light and and how long it lasts on the standard batter i get around 3 hrs.

Thanks for the thorough review. I just bought and received mine today. It has the 2.0 processor and a Gig of Ram. All in all it seems like a good notebook. I had seen some others commenting (different threads) about the quality of the screen and case. I may have been lucky but my screen/case doesn't have the issues as what was mentioned. It is obviously not a gaming machine but I will probably throw something on it later this week and test it out. I'll do my own thorough review when I have time.

silent wolf-

Hey. I'm looking into buying this model too, and was wondering if you might be able to check something out for me. Can you tell if the audio-in jack (mic icon) will accept a stereo audio signal cable? I mean, if you output a CD or tape deck (stereo) directly into the notebook's audio-in jack, will the dv4000 record it in stereo? It would help me out and you'd learn something about your new notebook too! Thanks.

ffrapa,

I'm not at a point where I can check this but will try to do it in the next day or so. If you need to know ASAP, then you may want to do some checking at HP's site.

I have a question... I heard the DV4000's screen is loose... and "wobbles and shakes" when you move it around on your lap... is any of this true? Does the thing feel sturdy and secure? If you place the laptop on your desk at a 90* angle, and grab the top of the screen, and try to open it more, does it stay at a 90* or open up more? Do you have to hold both the "Base" and the "Screen" to open it? I koow they're odd questions but I heard bad things...

Also, how does the TV out work? Do the wires to hook it up to the TV come with the Notebook, or do you have to buy them? Is there any way you can hook it up to your TV and take some pictures of that? Or at the very least a description.. this is to anyone, not just the Topic creator...

Ok, thats it for now.. thanks for the help

Hi folks
I ´m looking if Intel GMA 900 can play some strategy games?
I like the Presario v4160EA (Dothan 750) that comes with this gpu.
It´s the same that hp dv 4040. The Maintenance and Service Guide is the same.
Can you play Rise of Nations, Empire Earth, Empire Earth II, Homeworld 2, RailRoadTycooon 3 and similars strategy games?

I will be very happy if you can probe it for me. Only you that I meet can do it.

I know that HP-Compaq is no a lappy gamer, but time to time I wish play this games in it.

Sorry my English

I need a new laptop and I am thinking on Compaq Presario V4160EA or Acer Aspire 1690 WLMi

Ahhhh Great review

the screen is very nice and sturdy, to open it i gotta hold on to the base of the laptop

it does not wiggle at all, i get that with my acer 8104 ..

as for a the tv thiing it's not a tv tuner.. it's just a remote control that has quick play on it,

it turns on the laptop without logging into windows or anything something like a bios which allows u to watch dvd's movies, and listen to music.

Edit: i dont have any stragedy games to play. but i loaded fifa 2004 and 2005 and it works like a charm, i mean not the best best graphics. its playable.
