Problem with Half life 2

I have the Sager 4880 and so far it's been fantastic, runs every game like a dream until today, trying to get Halflife 2 to run. I have modded the Cat 5.4 drivers on this laptop so that part should have been fine. I get to where I pass the valve logo and the game starts loading into the main menu screen, it just hangs on loading and never goes any further..

I have updated my chipset, wireless, touchpad, audio, video and PCMCIA drivers. The only issue I am seeing that appears off is the monitor, I did the windows install myself and the CLAA150PB01 screen just comes up as Default monitor, the issue I do see is it shows up on the hardware list about 4-6 times as Default Monitor... I have tried removing them, changing it to plug and play, etc but it just comes back with more.

I am running Windows XP HOME with SP2 and all of the latest updates(with security center and all of its crap turned off completely)

I am now downgrading to the Cat 5.1 drivers to see if this helps.

any ideas?

*edit*

tried with the 5.1 cats and no luck, still having the same issue.

Have you tried running Driver Cleaner after uninstalling the drivers? Driver Cleaner can be found at www.driverheaven.net.

I also had some issues with the Cat 5.4 drivers after running mobility modder on them - each time the 4750 would boot up I would get an ATI control panel crash. I uninstalled them and installed the Omega Drivers (don't know the URL off the top of my head but a google search will turn them up). During the Omega Driver install the OS asked me if I wanted to overwrite several files found in c:\windows\system with older versions. Since it was my intention to roll back I said yes.

I guess my point is that uninstalling the drivers and running driver cleaner still doesn't seem to get rid of all of the old files. You might want to try installing the Omega Drivers, testing to see if your issue is solved and then uninstalling the Omegas if you're not happy with them as they tend to more cleanly uninstall than the ATI drivers do.

Hope this helps
