Powerbooks and OS X 10.4

Does any one have any idea when the powerbooks will come with Tiger installed? I read a review about installing Tiger over Panther. How you just might run into one problem or another. Or none at all. I mean you are installing one new OS over an exsisting one. IMHO, it would be better if the laptop or desktop came with the new Mac OS installed (e.g. the G5 desktops). I'd rather have a Powerbook.

well i got my powerbook over a month ago so it came with panther installed of course. so last night i went and picked up tiger and just did a fresh install. the erase and install probably took 30 minutes if that, it was really fast, i was actually surprised. i heard something like a month from now they will be installed on the hard drive. if you buy a powerbook now you will get tiger for free so you can just load tiger on and erase panther, no big deal.

granted i have an ibook, but i did an upgrade and haven't had any significant problems. as noted in another post, i got some choppy playback in quicktime w/divx files (while vlc and mplayer handled them fine). once i repaired permissions, everything worked peachy.

AFAIK, if u were to buy it from apple it should come w/ Tiger installed on it ( call and check w/ apple). if however it was a prepackaged stock machine sold thru a 3rd party like amazon, u would likely be given a Tiger install disk w/ your new system. once they went thru their Panther stock, they'd of course be shipping Tiger installed systems.

How do you guys know? Is this an "educated guess"? Or have you spoken to Apple Customer Service reps? Curious.

It is good to know that both of you haven't had any problems. Yet. It's a little early for RMHOP81 being as he's only had his Powerbook for "a little over a month". Keep us posted!

And, I will definitely contact Apple.ca, should I decide to pickup a Powerbook. I'm also considering either the Dell Inspiron 9300 or XPS. The Powerbooks intrigue me because of the intelligence and simplicity of the Mac OS X operating system and the many iAPPs (e.g. iLife 05, iWork...etc.). Only negative I can think of is that if you're at all into gaming, and plan to use your laptop for gaming, the titles are few and far between (in comparison with the PC brethern). For me, I won't be doing any gaming on my laptop. So that is a non-issue.

I would be using my laptop for checking/sending e-mails, web surfing and some digital media work (casual).

well, the powerbooks still come with panther. but it would be stupid of apple not to give you a tiger disk or just have it preinstalled. you never know, there may be an upgrade in progress for the powerbooks. new powermacs w/tiger, new powerbooks w/tiger, just a guess, maybe not very "educated" either, just hopes

Yeah, gaming is the only set back on the apple. But if you have a pc desktop, then just game on that while you do "work" on the notebook.

That's my plan. Pickup a powerful laptop first. Possibly an Apple Powerbook. Use it for everything but gaming. Wait till late 2006 for Longhorn and pickup a desktop with a dual-core cpu. I have a Dell 8400 as my desktop now. Serves me well. Haven't tried gaming. Not much of a gamer these days.

Have a good weekend guys!

Picked up my Powerbook yesterday at 2330 during the Tiger release fiasco. Tiger upgrade disk was included in the box. Apple opened factory boxes, dropped in the Tiger upgrade disk, then resealed them. I opted to do a clean install of Tiger from the update disk, then reinstalled the rest of the apps (i.e. iLife, etc). This is my first Mac and I'm lovin' it. Those widgets are pretty cool!
