Dell Latitude D600 Laptop Screen Resolution Problem, Poor colors on JPGs/Photos

Thread Starter
I recently had my Dell Latitude D600 LCD screen replaced because it was scratched and the screen that they have replaced it with has poor color quality on jpgs/photos, while icons and other graphics look fine. Dell has replaced the screen again and it's still doing the same thing.

They are now telling me that the motherboard will need to be replaced, as the video card is onboard, but I've hooked the laptop to an external monitor and the photos look normal. That makes me think that the video card is not the culprit.

I've also updated the video driver and even the BIOS to no avail.

All I can think is that maybe something is not connected properly or perhaps the first tech messed something up. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

make sure you're using lcd's native resolution. They may have given you the sxga+ screen as opposed to your previous xga

Thanks for your suggestion.

However, I originally had an SXGA+ monitor (LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, THIN FILM TRANSISTOR, SUPER EXTENDED GRAPHICS ARRAY PLUS, STANDARD PANEL WORK GROUP B, 14.1, SAMSUNG). How would I check the monitor type on the new one?

I have the resolution set to 1400x1050, which I think is the native resolution. The graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 onboard with 32Mb RAM.

The first page of the bios will tell you but if your resolution is 1400x1050, the screen is sxga+ (xga won't be able to do that).

You can check if the lcd cable is either loose or broken. Since you had two lcd replacement, it makes me think that they used the same cable and damaged it when doing the first lcd replacement.

I think that they also replaced the cable. Darn. I'll check if it's loose, but I am inclined to think that would not have happened every time it was replaced.

Could this have anything to do with the video card? I don't think so, right, since the video looks fine on an external monitor.

My brother has a D610 and the same photos look fine on his machine. Of course it seems like that machine has a different monitor according to dell (LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 14.1S+, STANDARD PANEL WORK GROUP B, SAMSUNG). However, both monitors should show photos properly I assume.

Another piece of info that might help is that the photos look almost like negatives and eventually completely black when I look at them from a very acute angle relative to the screen, but on my brother's machine I can see them clearly from any angle.

I doubt it since it looks fine on the external display

I can't really say if d600's lcd is the same as d610's. Haven't conclusively found out.

Is it possible for you to snap a picture with your digi cam (if you have one) of what you're talking about?

d600's screen does have a somewhat limited viewing angle and especially pictures on a black backround look like that what you're describing when viewed from the side. But you say this didn't happen before.

Good idea about taking a picture, but I don't have my camera with me for the weekend. I'll take one on Tuesday and post it then.

I wonder if Dell will give me the monitor from the D610 if I complain loudly enough, because if you're saying that the viewing angle is limited, then maybe it's just a limitation of the monitor. I actually don't remember for sure about the viewing angle before, but I am positive that photos looked fine when viewed head-on at least and now they look awful.

Post the pic (host it here imageshack.us) and I'll show you how it looks (supposed to) on my sxga+ screen

posted the original photo, as well as photos of my view (D600) and my brother's view (D610) of the same photo (turns out he had a camera i didn't know about).

original photo:

Bad (D600) view (notice the reddish hues on the faces -- the red in the upper left is intentional)

Good (D610) view (faces look normal)

Here is mine. I'm in a pretty poor lit room so it might now show that much detail:

It's possible that each lcd (even if of same type) needs different calibration. Most likely your old one was by a different manufaturer (mine is samsung) You can adjust the red and other colors in your ATI driver program (right click on desktop->properties->settings tab->advanced->look for color adjustment tab):

Well, the pic looks better on your machine than on mine. Do you recommend me using the Omega drivers that you have? What about all the BIOS settings as listed on the site omegadrivers.net (http://www.omegadrivers.net/mb_bios.php)?

Yes, it does a little.

I use them for a couple of reasons. It gives me a few more minor options, radlinker, dell's ati driver locked up my system somethimes when I plugin/unplugh the ac cord with the system running, no double flicker when running on battery

have to look in to that but i haven't done any special configuration on my system such as color calibration
