Satellite A70-S209 shuts off randomly-- please help

My laptop shuts off at random intervals, while i'm in the middle of working (wether it's plugged in or not). At first i though it had something to do with the battery, since it stays on longer if i leave it off for a longer amount of time, but the problem is getting worse (the computer stays on for about 15 minutes and then shuts off). Maybe my battery is broken? Or it might have something to do with the AC adapter. Or the laptop itself. Has anyone else had this problem?

it sounds like a hardware problem, after reading some threads here I realized A70's has problems including mine.

If it's completely shutting off, then there are two possibilities that I know of.

1. Your computer is overheating, due to the fans being clogged. That has happened to me, as I was surprised to see how fast dust accumulated. Try blowing the fans out with compressed air and see if that helps.

2. You are experiencing an issue with the A70 shorting out due to a flaw in the case near the speakers. For that, you can check Toshiba's support site, as they have a support bulletin on it and, I think, will replace the case free of charge.

Hope that helps!

download speedfan

and if it keeps shutting off a certain temp(usually around the 150 range farenheit) then it most likely is a heating problem.
Either clean out your fans or get a notebook cooler

All you need to do is take a can of compressed air and blow it at the fan holes on the underside of your machine. Just make sure you stand back slightly, so you don't get a face full of dust

A70 Users

We have pending litigation against TAIS for the M30X, M35X, A70 and A75 models for shut down, lock-up and static discharge issues. If you would like additional information or would like to participate in our current investigation, you may contact sklarlaw@aol.com or go to http://www.lorisklar.com/toshad.htm

good for you, got to make money some how. /end sarcasm

could be the ESD issue, in which case you need to take it to a service centre where the top cover/palm rest is replaced. It's done under warranty. I only have seen the on the A70 models.
If it is the heatsink blocked up, it has to be removed to clean it. Blowing air back through it is a band aid solution and won't clean it properly.

See if the battery will charge. When the computer is off plug in the ac adaptor and check out the lights on the front. The light for the battery will probably be amber and the last one to the right. Feel the rectangular box of the ac adaptor to see if it gets warm, if it doesn't or the light doesn't come on, then you have a motherboard problem. If you unplug the adaptor form the case and feel the plug, it should be room temperature (after charging the battery for awhile). If the plug is warm or hot then the plug-in assembly in the back of the computer is shorting out and probably needs resoldering. If you can charge the battery until the light is green or lets say about an hour (keep checking the adaptor for warmth, it should be warm if charging). Now see if the computer will bootup. If it does then you probably have a motherboard problem.

My computer runs fine on a well charged battery, but will not boot if the battery is out. Your computer may be charging the battery when off, to run it longer when on. Since the problem is getting worse it means to me that it is no longer charging the battery well when shut down. I have sent my computer to the factory 5 times now for the above problem, they've changed the casing, resoldered the ac adaptor contact, changed the ac adaptor and changed the motherboard 3 times. It is at the factory now
