I have had my 4780 for at least a year now, and have been nothing but happy with it. It's run basically every popular game that has released in the last year just fine. Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry, World of Warcraft, CS:S, and many more run fine even at pretty high settings on this machine.
However, when Guild Wars released... things changed. Even at the lowest settings, running at the native resolution of 1400/900 the game gets very slow and choppy during even the smallest of fights. During 4v4 arena battles sometimes I am taken down to a frame by frame fight. I have no idea why this is happening, as in other games everything runs great even in multiplayer with many people on the screen at the same time.
System Specs: 4780, 3.0Ghz P4 with HT enable, 1gig of ram, 7200rpm 80gigHD, 9600 Pro. I keep the machine very clean, defrag once a week, everything else runs great. Still booting up in 20 seconds flat.
I have a desktop machine that is sitting next to me with the following specs:
2.4Ghz AMD T-Bird, 512 DDR2700, 80gig 7200rpm drive, Ti4200 video card.
This machine runs almost all games I have like shit. Some are ok, but i think they all look like shit in 1024/768 which is the highest resolution I can get out of it without it shitting all over itself. It runs guild wars just fine, even pretty damn well at MAX settings. My girlfriend uses it to play guild wars with me, and during fights where I can't do anything because my laptop is running so slow, she is moving along just fine, not experiencing any fps loss at all. It's rather frustrating seeing a 3 year old machine out perform my "godly" laptop.
Any ideas? I have almost wanted to build a new desktop just because I love guild wars so much, but can't have fun with it because it's unplayable on my baby.
