the s460 is the retail prepared version of the s480/s380. pretty much the same shit. poor graphics and poor battery life.
i ordered a configured s380 (2.0 / 1gb ram / double battery) and returned after one day, and then bought the s360 from amazon. the price of the s360 should be something like 1700 - 250 rebates. with those 250 you can put an extra microdimm of 512 and a double capacity battery, much better deal for the money!:
The s480 and s380 are the same unit right? You said you asked the sony rep. He said they were different units or that you could only put 512mb in the 380 vs 256mb in the 480. I dont see any technological differences.
About the s460. When you look at the fact that you can get a unit comparable built by sony but with only a 40gb hd( i plan on getting a 100gb 7200rpm drive so no point getting the 80gb), it comes out to be around $1749. And sony is also giving you a 2 year express ship warranty included. It also starts at the end of the manufacturers 1yr warranty so you have 3yrs of coverage. Now, if you dont care about the warranty, and dont plan on changing the hard drive, the s460 on amazon isnt bad. But, its only $50 cheaper than from sony with a 40gb drive. Its $150 more if you stick with the 80gb if you dont want to upgrade. In that case the amazon deal may be the way to go.
I'll probally go thru sony b/c of the warranty and im changing drives. Its also nice that i'll get the double layer burner i want, vs having to spend $400 if i really wanted it that bad on a s360. Only thing the sucks on the s480 is the gpu. But, i was on notebookreview and a guy on their overclocked his 6200 turbocache with coolbits and it benched higher on his new sony fs with 1.73 p-m vs his 2ghz dothan s series. Some on this board also overcloked his s380 with coolbits. Supposedly it generates no extra heat or anything. If this is true, its great as i can get my dvd burner, and built in bluetooth straight from sony.
