Format Dell HD

I'm receiving my new 9300 tomorrow... Yeah!!! I ordered a Hitachi 40GB 7200rpm drive to replace the 4.2k or 5.4k that will be in there. I'll install the new HD and do a complete install.

My question is this - how do I format the old drive so that it is clean before I sell it on Ebay?

Thanks, Tim

you can just stick the windows cd in there....and erase/delete the partition. You don't have to install windows though

I'll try that... just cancel the windows install after the format.

Thanks magalarn,
I found the site, downloaded the iso and burned the image to a disk.

We'll see how it works when my 9300 comes from UPS today!!!

I tried DBAN with a i9300 that I returned. Be prepared to let it run for a looooooong time. (I think it needs to be updated to include support for newer chipsets.)

Umm, if you are wiping a factory installed drive, what kind of useful information will be on it? That makes next to no sense, really.
Just wipe the partition table with a Linux livecd and you'll be fine.. there's no need to a wipe a disk you've never even used.

I'll have it for at least two days before I get the new HD from NewEgg. So I want to make sure that none of my business or personal info is on the old one. Besides, who knows what personal info Dell has preloaded on those.

Also, anettis, what do you mean by a loooooong time? a couple of hours, overnight, days?

In my case I had loaded up tons of softare and my data files in order to "test drive" the notebook. After about 10 days I returned it so at this point it made sense to wipe the drive.

It all depends on a number of things such as the settings you choose for the delete, the size of the hard drive, and what kind of system (chipset) you have installed. It could be many hours or even days.

The current version 1.5 does not support ICH6(9300's southbridge). I tried to wipe my hdd (80GB, 5400rpm)with one simple pass and it took 18 hours. It took only 3 hours to complete one pass zero last time when I tried to wipe the same size same rpm hdd on my old i9200 as dban supported ICH4(9200's southbridge) properly.
