8790 Toshiba HD corrupt for the second time

Hi everybody, the other day i started to notice windows was running much slower than normal, and everything was running all buggy, like it would start freezing every 5 seconds and wahtnaught, so i try to do a reinstall. Before i could even backup my files windows would no longer boot, or if it did it would get to the desktop, then just hang, and luckily i had a copy of BART PE XP so i was able to boot that up and get the remainder of my files onto my external hd. After a long sigh of relief for the retrevial of my precious precious files i tried to reinstall windows, but the hard drive would not format, it kept getting stuck at 20%, i tried it like 5 times, and now i'm running a surface test. I started it at like 11 last night and now its about 85% done.... 20 hours later... bad news is that it already detected 2 bad sectors at the very beginning of the drive, hopefully i can do something about that *prays for a fix* but if not, this is going to be the second Toshiba 80 gig hd sager has sent me that has gone the way of the dodo. Its really annoying since my warrentee just came up ! I checked on the toshiba site and it says the hd's have a 1 yr warentee on them, maybe i can get sager to honor it for me.... *sigh* or maybe i can just get a new one by using the insurance on my laptop, anyone have any thoughts or advice? I'll post again once the surface test is FINALLY done.

Thanks in advance,

Vicviper

My Hitachi HD (and replacement, and replacement of the replacement) from Sager already broke 3 times in total. The Toshiba HD only broke once :-)
All in less than 1 year. Oh I only use the laptop at home and physically move it once every 3 months.

Euclid if you are having to replace a hd that often something else is wrong with the laptop. Disks (even crappy Toshiba ones) don't fail that often. Check your temps (mobilmeter - search the forums or pm me for a copy), make sure your fans are ok and that you have cleaned the heatsinks.

As to Toshiba disks - get rid of them. I had a second Toshiba in my 8890 and it died about 18m after purchase. A friend of mine had a HP nx9040 with a Toshiba disk - died in 4 months and he hardly uses his laptop. I figure that other manufacturers are offering 3-5 year warranty and Toshiba can't - well they don't get my business particularly as their track record has been very poor.

On the Hitachi side I am *very* surprised by Euclid's claims. The Hitachi's would have to be one of the best disks on the market. That's why I suspect some other problem with his laptop.

And I forgot to say that the same effect of slowing down etc etc that Vicviper described was exactly what happened to my friend's HP nx9040.

When we tried to reformat the Toshiba disk, it died at the 52% mark with major problems. Go with with G-Omaha suggests.
