z71v and Counter-Strike Source

I was having a problem with my cpu maxing out at 100% in game so i reformatted because framerates were running at 12-20fps on servers with 20 people playing. I just wondered what fps people are getting on CounterStrike in servers at about that size. Also in counter strike source, do a video stress test and see what fps you get at the end, I got 93.43fps.

(off topic) you need more ram
he's got a whole gig? what do you need 2 gigs for other than visual editing and CAD?

I would search out some tweaking guides and that might help. I think he has enough RAM but try to shut down anything you don't need when playing, take off indexing if it's on. XP tweak is a great guide, use Google, it really helped my desktop, probably can help your notebook.

Make sure you havent fried you video card
post #6 of 19
Are you running at 1680x1050? AA and AF turned on? What settings are you using for video?

That sounds like the problem that B Nietsnie had after he overclocked (and fried) his video card.

B nietsnie, how to you check to see if it is fried or not? I reformatted and i did the video stress test in Counter-strike and got 93.43 average fps. When i play in servers with less people i get good fps, but if i go into a sever with 20 players it drops alot in fps to the 5-20 range. I dropped my res to 800 x 600 in the game which looks stretched on this screen but it gets me fps that ranges/fluctuates from 40-200. I really am not sure how to test to see if my video card is broken or not.

I don't think your card is toast. You're probably lagging due to the connection speed.
Something doesn't seem right if you're fluctuating that much.. lag can definitely slow down the game, but it shouldn't really affect FPS all that much. More players will definitely slow down the computer because it has to keep track of a lot more information and render more things.

If there's no visual artifacts, then there's probably not any easy way to find out if your card is screwed up. Run graphics intensive things like 3DMark.. If it can go through all the tests and everything, then your video card is probably ok.

To me, it sounds like something else is your problem.. Could be internal bandwidth issues, or some process, or a driver that is causing issues. Are you playing over a wireless connection?

Does HL2 run just as well as the CS:S stress test, or does it get bogged down when lots of things are going on too?

I agree. I think you might have bandwith issues or maybe you need to double check your setup. Are you wired or wireless?? What's your router settings?? Have you tried different channel setting (1, 5, 6, 7, or 11)? Have you tried uninstalling & reinstalling video card driver & Wi-Fi driver??

If you're wireless - Goto, start > settings > network connections > right click on local area connection > properties > configure > advanced > and make sure property is set for b or g, long tremble, 54 Mbps, channel settings.....etc

It definitely isnt my connection, my ping is real good in game, and when I played brothers in arms (single player game) on it when I noticed it in CSS running 100% i could not play it because fps was so bad. i have reformatted, and are using latest stock drivers, I plan on trying brothers in arms on it tonight. I tried CSS again but dropped resolution to 800x600, and put settings on low in game, and i was getting 50-200fps but it fluctuates like crazy and gets choppy in some parts (so it might be going to 5-20 fps), at this resolution it is stretched. I will try installing other drivers that have other resolutions. Although i changed settings to low in the game CSS says that recommended for this card is high on most of them.

I had the similar problem with my desktop using ATI 9700 Pro playing C&C:General awhile back. When play local, it is fine, but when play online. It get very choppy and FPS flux like crazy.

After spending a month on the C&C:General forum, it turned out there was a bug in their software with the the router I was using. Took them like 6 months after the game was released before it was fixed

My Desktop at the time was

Asus Motherboard
AMD-XP 2800+
2GB RAM DDR PC2700

Just a thought.

If you haven't already, run some benchmarks, so you can rule out the card. It erks me when a product has been out for a while, you can't find any support/forum for the GeForce Go 6600.

I was referring to the video card, not the laptop.

which hasn't been out much longer...

It is extremely unlikely to be anything bandwidth related. All I can think of is to try tweaking your in-game settings and video settings.

the GPU could very well be defective. I had a Powercolor Radeon 9700 Pro that seemed to crash every 10 minutes in games. I tried everything I could think of, reinstalled all sorts of things, tweaked, nothing.

Eventually I RMA'd the card (Had it replaced under warranty). The new card was rock stable.
