If you want to try an interesting experiment, swap your Samsung and LG LCDs (it's easy to swap the entire lid assembly). I'd be willing to bet that the difference you are seeing is due to brightness, and that the brightness is a function of the laptop. So, if you swap the LCDs, you might actually prefer the Samsung on the brighter XPS2.

What I found was that the LG looks better when it is brighter. The brightness makes the "sparkle" less apparent and the whites look whiter. However, when I compared an LG and a Samsung at the same brightness level, I preferred the Samsung, but that's just a personal preference.

Bottom line: backlight intensity makes a huge difference.
I am not risking any scratches, and tearing apart a completely new laptop but that is my preference ^^.

Plus I gotta decide to send one back so I don't want to risk any mistakes to either one. One has already been taken apart and the lid is kinda loose on it, even after the Dell guy tighten the screws nicely.

I set it to 96 DPI and medium vibrance for both, and this new LG screen blows it away.

Someone said that the LG screens have only 6 brightness levels, well this one has 7 and it's much whiter, brighter, and crisper than my Samsumg plus the text is easier to read and less sparkles. The main thing is the new LG is easier on my eyes.

I will play with both some more when I have time.

I'm just trying to bust a myth, because I was a big Samsung supporter till now.

I must say I seem to have the same clear crisp LG as you because I cannot figure out what everyone is complaining about either.. This is my first Dell so I really have nothing to compaire it to but to me its krystak clear and I love it.. Also mine has 7 different brightness adjustments too, and when I go from lvl 2 to 3 there's no difference but I'm sure your LG is like that too...My screen

This is the nature section of macdesktops. They have 1920x1200

Thanks!!! that help alot.

OMG the colors on my new LG seem much deeper and 3D like with those scenic pictures - makes it look like HD TV hehe.

I will try those with my Samsung tommorrow and see if there is any difference.

BTW the 2nd LG screen blows away the first LG screen by millions of miles and edges out the Samsung due to the newer LG screens brighter whites and more vibrant colors plus less strain on the eyes.

i really think that the Samsung's dingy white is what strains the eyes.

The white on the Samsung has a hint of yellowish tint to it.

Wow I just watched the same DVD on the new LG that I watched on the Samsung when I tested it. Hands down the LG is so much more colorful and vibrant.

I'm very impressed. DVD's look better on the new LG. I also read some different news sites and the text is so much easier to read.

The next test that I did was put a high res scenic wallpaper on both my LG screen and my 20 inch ultrasharp LCD monitor on my destkop. The new LG colors come in almost as colorful and deep as my desktop LCD when I put them side by side. When I did it with the Samsung, it had that dingy brightness that made the color dull and didn't come even close to the colorfulness of my desktop LCD.

Next test is the most important, GAMES!!!

Then i will do a dead pixel test on the new LG just to make sure there isn't any dead pixels.

Last thing, this new LG to me has no sparkles that I can see.

I went to www.yahoo.com which has a lot of white in the background, and put them both on my desktop 20 inch LCD and the new LG, both of the white looks the same, no sparkles.

Maybe alot of the people who complain about sparkles aren't use to LCD screens because they have used CRTs?

The Samsung one that replaced my one LG screen, is decent but the white seems a little dirty and the colors are not as vibrant as the new LG one. Also the Samsung one kinda strain my eyes, but the new LG one is no strain on the eyes at all.

Should I keep the Samsung one due to the majority consensus on this forum and stick with Samsung? Or go with this new LG screen that is like nothing any of the LG critics has described on the forums. Could the LG owners who got great screens be right about LG? Or is my eyes playing tricks on me??

Well, what do you think? It's like saying "Congratulations, you've won a prize. Which one do you choose? A brand new Nissan Maxima or a brand new Hummer H2?" ...The choice is obvious, my friend. I have an LG as well and even if I don't have another laptop with a Samsung screen to compare with, I am content with the LG. My LG screen is awesome. No sparkles, no dead pixels, some light leakage at the bottom. Stick with the screen that looks good on your eyes. And it's not a trick either.

By the way, I also have 7 levels of brightness. Now, can we stop the question with the friggin' screen?

I have really liked my LG, the colors are awesome, resposne time is good, no sparkles, atleast from what I can tell, also my LG has 7 levels, I am not using any type of utility so just using fn + up/down visually seeing the difference, i have 7 brightness levels as well, maybe thats why I like my LG so much? everyone with a 7 brightness level one is good?
i have an LG with 7 levels of brightness and i assure you it is not good. though colors are excellent and vibrant, but way to sparkly.

That's good news, maybe someone went down to the LG plant and slapped the sparkle guys around a bit. They must have run out of the old crappy stock and got some new stuff! I'm glad you like it, happy for you....keep the one YOU like the most!
I must have the same screen as you then...I just got my 9300 today with an LG screen, and I absolutely can't fathom why people are complaining about it. I don't notice this sparkle at all...and the colors are so nice and bright. Maybe I just got lucky, but this is damn near one of the nicest laptop screens I've ever seen/used.
Does anyone see the ripple effect in the screens reflection? If I look at my reflection or what every is behind me , and zero in on a strait line it appears rippled. Is that normal? Thanks for any feedback.
Mine does that too...I think it's just an effect of the glossy coating.

Same here...

How can you assure anyone that it is not good??

I've had 2 LG screens and a Samsung one, plus 2 LCD desktop monitors. I have enought to compare hehe.

Me too, mine is awesome the only downfall I can find is the text on certain web sites is sooo small.... even at 120 DPI.
well my LG is the best screen i have ever seen, much better than my dad's 8600 which has a WUXGA samsung, or the toshiba UXGA in my sisters 8100 or my hp omnibook which i sold, or the countless LCD's i have seen as desktop monitors.

Ah see I love small text...this WUXGA screen is great to me. I wish I could have it even smaller than it is now. Using 96DPI btw, too.
