Busting the myth - Got Samsung and LG screen XPS gen2 - Page 4

I have an LG. It is great. Beautiful color. No shimmer, No sparkles. Minimal light leakage. I must admit, I have been staring at the display with the laptop off, just admiring how nice it looks, but haven't noticed any ripples in my image. Ah well, must be one of the lucky ones. BTW, I haven't seen any posts on the Dell forums re problems with the LCDs on 9300/xps gen 2's

THere is feature in browsers which let you expand your text. Plus you should set your DPI to 96 and set your font size in windows to large, it's better for images on web pages so they don't look pixelated.

The funny thing about the exchange XPS gen2 I received was that I really was hoping for another Samsung but like a blessing in disguised it turned out to be a even better LG which I dreaded getting because of my first one but to my surprise it blew me away. Life is so ironic.

Well, this leads me to believe that one of my earlier suspicions may be coming to pass. That there was a stock of LG AND Samsung screens which already had the anti-glare coating that were just overlaid with the glossy coating and used in the i9300 and iXPS2 that would eventually run out. And that the new screens used would not have the anti-glare + the gloss coating and thus no sparkles.

It's hard to tell just on the basis of people's opinions because many have gotten the screens can't see or don't call what they see sparkels. But this is the first time I've seen someone say they had sparkles on an LG then get a newer LG and say they didn't have sparkles.

I really don't believe there's that much variation in screen quality with screens of the same brand, as in one guy got a "good" LG and another got "bad" one. But I do believe the sparkle defect is caused by an optional coating that could be excluded were it not that there was already a large batch of screens that already had it applied and it cannot be removed.

This is still just speculation on my part. I hope to hear more about this. Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of the infamous Dell sparkly 17inch screen. If so, I will be arranging a replacement for my Samsung shortly.

You might be right, I hardly see any sparkiles on the NEW LG.

I'm keeping the LG due to the more vibrant colors and the easier to read text which puts less strain on the eyes.

I think the reason that it's easier to read is because the whiter whites on the LG give a better contrast to the black or dark color texts so it helps the eyes read.

Sonic, the XPS 2 system I received last week has a "new" LG on it and it is still sparkle city. Some people just don't seem to notice it as much and I suspect that's the case with Dragkhan.

I'm glad your telling me what I see and don't see and what to think hehe. Anyways you suspect wrong Sherlock.

I'm looking at the Samsung and the LG, the sparkles aren't as bad as the first LG, plus I have 2 LCD desktop monitors I'm comparing them to.

Don't get testy because I don't say what you want to hear

Before I got my 2nd LG screen, I was the biggest LG basher because of my first one and if you see my other post I was actually hoping for another Samsung but after ths I changed my mind.

Btw I have perfect vision.

Bah, I see the sparkles. It's the same amount as on my Desktop Dell, Planar, and NEC monitors. Light sparkles. In November 2004 Dell released a WUXGA 9200 monitor that had such heavy sparkling it was like frost on the screen and produced a holographic effect. At that point the threads went wild and furious....and now the memory still remains and people see a defect where there is merely a normal coating effect - similar to the guy complaining about a crack in his case that is really a seam - or the guy I saw in the Wilson Leather store complaining about a crack in his leather coat that is really natural grain in the leather, or my admitting manager friend at the local hospital who jokes about how she goes home every day wondering what disease or cancer she has after looking at so many sick people and their complaints and diagnoses through the day...

I think you're the one that's getting testy with the eyerolling emoticons and insults. I just don't think you have some new special LG, they're all pretty much still the same and I don't doubt there is a quality variation between each unit but not large enough to make them vastly different.

Uh ok...

I just don't like people telling me what I see and don't see. I know what IC.

The emoticons are meant to bring some humor into this conversation.

If you don't see as much sparkle, thats fine and I believe you. However the thread title is very misleading and does what you accuse me of: telling people what they see and don't see. Like I said, I too have a brand new XPS 2 with a new LG and it looks exactly like the LG I had over a month ago. So unless by some freak chance they created a special LG for you by mistake, you might have just had a bad quality LG before and maybe even a subpar Samsung now..shrug.

The title of the thread was meant to say that not all the LGs are that bad albeit a myth that all LGs have horrible sparkles and suck.

Did I ever tell anyone what I thought they saw or did not see? I was just expressing what I saw, you can take that with a grain of salt.

I really don't care who's right - I'm just happpy with the new LG screen so let's just leave it to this picture to end it.

Is the LG with less sparkles also brighter than the LG with more sparkles? If so, can you drop the brightness on the brighter one till it matches the darker one and tell us if you still think the sparkles and whites are different on the two? I suspect that it may just be that the backlight brightness is different on the two.

I have to admit this LG does seems brighter than my old one at the different brightness levels. The old LG did have what seem to be a coating that sonicwind describe, I'm guessing.

Heinrich that is the most sane thing said today LOL, so true....

I posted earlier that I got my first XPS2, now yesterday. Not to sound redundant on the issue, but I'm not even using the XPS2 because the sparkly effect is so harsh on my eyes. I spoke with dell today and they simply told me it was normal for the glossy, high resolution lcd screens to have sparkles because its made for gaming and not web-browsing or word processing. I still have 20 days but will probably return it by the end of the week. I did not mention to Dell what I learned from these forums because I was looking for Dell to be upfront with me and maybe offer an apology or at least offer an exchange. Dell simply said I had 20 days to return it after I told them the display was not acceptable. I stopped by best buy and circuit city today for comparison and not a single glossy coat lcd screen had the sparkly effect. the x-brite on the high resolution sony was very easy on my eyes, as well as compaq's and toshiba's glossy coat notebooks. All that to say, if Dell had been more candid in their response to me (I'm not asking that they tell me that they have a quality control problem, but at least tell me upfront that an exchange should address my problem), then I would have simply asked them for an exchange.

So far compared to my 20 and 18 inch Ultrasharp Dell LCD monitors and my 700m laptop, the so called sparkles are not visible.

When I read posts where people say the screen looks fine, BUT can I download Everest and see which one I got? Then, they go, oh well it's an LG so I am going to request the Samsung to see if it is better Sorry, but I never read where Dell entitled everyone to free screen replacements to "compare". I seriously wonder how many people would have noticed or cared if there weren't like a billion threads about it...

I went to Best Buy and Circuit City and I saw very little difference between my screen and the ones there with the exception of the Sony X-brite. I say if you are looking for THAT nice of a display pony up the cash or shut up and enjoy your Dell...

I get sick of people who think it's their job to moniter peoples posts and make negative remarks on them. Since when is it a bad thing to try and get the most value for your buck , it's happening within Dell's policy. To me customer sastisfaction garanteed means exactly that. This forum, amoung other things, is to ask questions and recieve answers, if you want to make a guy feel bad for seeking help go to a counter strike forum or something.
