Speaker question

Just bought a 2.1 altec lansing speakers however I’m now asking myself, should I of bought 5.1 speakers even though the 5680 is 2.1 compatible? I know that the 5680 is 5.1 for dvd playing but considering the 5680 is only 2.1 for gaming, will the 5.1 system automatically turn into a 2.1 (leaving the other 3 disabled) when I’m playing a game?
Why is the 5680 turn into 2.1 for gaming? I was looking at getting the logitech z680's would this be a bad choice?

Even if I get an external sound and use the digital optical or coaxial output on that it would still be 2.1 for gaming right? But then I could use the analog on an external sound card. So without going analog with an extral sound card it is impossible to get 5.1 sound when gaming?

ok, clear a few things up. When you get a 5.1 system and hook it into a 2.1 sound, you get 2.1 sound using all 5 speakers plus sub. If you get the sound blaster extigy then it would change ur sound card to that and therefore would be able to get full 5.1 sound. I dont think you made a bad choice with 2.1 unless you own your own theater and were panning on using the 5.1 It all depends on how you use it.

wakeman, if you use the z680's on 2.1 sound chip, you will get 2.1 sound. It will use all the speakers but that doesnt mean you will get the 5.1

anyway, i got the z680's and spent $280+ in the process. These speakers are cystal clear and have a very defined sound. However, they dont get as loud as i thought they would. The bass I can hear from half way up the street, but the sopund itself is not all that loud. if i had it to do again i would not get them because i am disappointed in the total volume they can produce.

and the final note, i am using the 8890 sound chip in its 5.1 channel mode. I myself have a question though. DOes anywone know if the sound card has anything to do with max volume of the speakers. I was gonna get the sound blaster extigy but if it does not make a difference i might not get t because that would be a waste of 100+ dollars. anyone know if getting the extigy will allow my speakers to play louder than the current ac97 sound in the 8890

Nope, the sound card would have no difference in volume (but would have a difference in distortion, clarity, etc)

You are limited by the amp of the speakers.

thats crap. these r supposedly the best pc speakers sold. I read reviews that even said this rivals some of the best home theater systems (similarly priced of course). I am gonna have to go buy an amp for my pc speakers. what crap is that

How do you get the 5.1 speaker system to work with the 5680/?? i heard its 5.1 for dvd but its not working....i have the logitech z-640 - i assume the way to get 5.1 to work is to put it in the
s/pdif port?

Go into the mixer and make sure everything is turned up first, there should be a speaker icon in the system tray.

If not go into control panel and choose "sounds and audio devices" and then click "show volume icon in the taskbar" click ok.

BTW, an amp won't help the speakers, the amp is built in. I'd check the mixer first. By default everything is in the middle just about.

Yes, this is true. You need speakers that accept Digital input.

can you or anyone suggest any 5.1 systems with this?
The logitech z-680's have digital coaxial and digital optical input. These are the ones I plan on getting. I believe the spdif port on the 5680's is a coaxial digital output.

im at school and was gonna try and go without responding so i dont have to login, but i thought id help a bit here. (as well as post another complaint)

I know on the 8890 the 5.1 output is selected by going into your speaker options and selecting it as 5.1 (thats the software part) next, you have to take the 3 wires that the speakers offer (left, front, center & bass) and plug them into the 3 ports on the side of the laptop. That is line in, spdif out&mic in, and the headphone port. I could not get them to work with simply the spdif port or the headphone port. I am not sure how it works on the 5680, but i got mine from the user manual, try readin it. (yea yea i read the manual) Anyway, on to my complaint

I had the pc speaker volume at mid range when i first tried but quickly realized that that needed to be up when i cranked the speakers and they were not even that loud. I turned the pc volume way up along with all other settings in the volume control, and this is the experience from what i am posting. Dont get me wrong, the speakers gewt loud, but $400 retail price loud,,,, no! I am happy to have gotten them at the pctorque discount. I was using winamp and turned up all those settings and i noticed some cracking in the speakers (nopt complaining because my other speakers would do nothing but static when i turned winamp settings up). I want to know a way to get these speakers louder. I am gonna haver to buy aftermark speakers and hook them into the sub so that i can get some more sound. The bass rocks the house but i dont want ALL bass, i want more volume. Anyway, any more suggestions on how to make the actual lyrics louder?????

I own the ADA885 and they work fine. I havn't tried them out for volume because I dont want to make the neighbors mad. They even come with the right adapter (The one with the yellow miniplug to black RCA)

awesome! Do all 5 of the speakers work on the 5680?
lol marq. I only want volume for mid day or so. Anyway, my house is on a corner shared on by me and the woods next door. I dont want the speakers so loud they can be heard 100 yards away, just throughout my house. anyway, i sent logitech an email asking them if there is a way. I believe there is if i just hook up extra speakers to the outputs, but then again i could blow the thing by doing that too much of a power draw. thanks for ur help.

Yes, the system is 4.1 or 2.1 depending on how you want to configure it. I've never seen another speaker system do that in as clever a way. All four speakers produce sound . . . but I havn't actually tested 4.1 surround sound because I dont have any games/dvds that will produce that kind of sound . . . [] but it should work because both the computer and speakers are capable of it.

Yes, the SPDIF input on the speakers is an RCA style coax input. AL provides an RCA-male to RCA-male cable for this. They also provide an RCA-female to coax miniplug male adapter which goes in the spdif out on the back of your Sager. The Spdif out on the sager actually supports both coax and optical spdif, its kinda neet. With these speakers however you will be using coax.

The connections for the speakers don't get a top rating from me, nor does style. But beyond that I like them.
