Does anyone know when a better 17" screen will be out?
sxga/uxga, anything better than xga.

Thats what I am holding out for.

The Thinkpad R50p but with a 15.4 inch screen is nearly the perfect machine. Minus the cost, there is not much to complain about.

Gateway M505 notebook

Gateway is launching a Pentium M / ATi 9600 notebook called the M505 as the successor to their M500 model:

Gateway M505 specifications

Gateway M505 pictures

Gateway M505 User's Guide

Gateway M505 other support information

It seems to be a nice looking laptop.

The Gateway M505 is now available for sale with a starting price of $1599.

It seems that Gateway is buying the M505 from Gigabyte since it is identical to the Gigabyte N601 as seen in this Russian photo:

I must say, it's about time a P-M/9600 was released.
Unfortunately for Gateway (not that they care about one sale), after doing extensive research I decided to get an Athlon64/9600 laptop. A bit more expensive, but faster and more "future-proof", plus VoodooPC and Hypersonic offer system board upgrades when they arrive on the market, and the warranty is transferrable, greatly increasing the laptop's resell value.
As a Linux user, Athlon64 processors can greatly improve the performance of some software, since one can compile the sourcecode for the Athlon64 rather than a generic x86 cpu. Even if the larger registers don't help, having twice as many of them will.
Additionally, with the power-saving features of the Athlon64 and with the 12-cell Li-Ion battery that the two A64 laptops on the market come equipped with, there are situations where the A64 can have a longer battery life than the P-M (though this would probably be the exception rather than the rule).

I respect your decision.

In the mean time, I (and others) have been using the thread you started as a convenient place to post breaking information on Pentium M laptops with ATi 9600 graphics.

Speaking of which, it looks like HP/Compaq is getting ready to release a successor to the X1000 called the X1200 which MAY offer ATi 9600 graphics. See the thread here.

Hmmm... Royalties...

The Gateway laptop looks very good for those slightly more interested in battery life and slightly less interested in performance.

According to Tom's Hardware Guide, ECS is showing a new Centrino / ATi 9600 laptop at Comdex (look at the bottom of the page). The new model is called the ECS G552. You can download the user manual complete with pictures and specifications at the bottom of this ECS G552 support page.

ECS G552 notebook

It is not a centrino notebook. If you go to ECS.com you will see that the G552 contains the Pentium 4 mobile chip. They really should choose the new dothan chip or the current centrino.
If you go to the following sit they sell centrino notebooks with the m10 64 mb ram:

www.internetishop.com

The only thing I have not found out if you can change the configuration of these preconfigured systems

I agree that the current specifications of the ECS G552 show that it has the Pentium 4-M CPU. Nonetheless, the BIOS Setup section of the G552 English user manual (page 63 of 108 in the pdf file) shows that it has a Pentium M CPU. Also, the article in Tom's Hardware Guide states that they are showing a Centrino (i.e., Pentium M) laptop at Comdex with ATI's Mobility Radeon 9600.

Edit 12/1/2003:
According to this DigiTimes article, the new Centrino / ATi 9600 laptop from ECS will be called the G556 and NOT the G552. Here is a description of the laptop from the article:

"The G556 Centrino notebook features a 15-inch TFT LCD display, a 1.7GHz Intel Pentium M processor, a 855PM chipset, a Radeon 9600 graphics chip from ATI Technologies, a 60GB hard disk and a DVD-RW drive. Positioned as a flagship notebook product, the G556 is priced at around NT$73,999 (about US$2,176)." The article also shows a picture of it.

Edit 12/3/2003:
Here is the page on the G556 from the ECS global website.

Here is Voodoo PC's version of the ECS G556.

I have browsed and searched this website and can only find Centrino notebooks with the M9 and not the M10. Can you provide a more specific link?
Yes I agree , I see what you where talking about in regards to the G552.

In reference to the centrino notebooks just follow the instructions below:

go to www.internetishop.com..........

On the left side of the screen, click on Laptop complete solution.
Next screen, click on Intel centrino series. The next screen should reveal 10 models. Go to model # A057C15G and A057C13F. The only problem I can see with those models is the hard drive speed and the screen display ( No SXGA+ listed ).

Hope this helps you.

Any word on a price of this model? I am really liking this, especially if it's forty percnet less than the price of the Thinkpad R50p (he he he). Powerwise it can give the R50p a run for its money; its only missing UltraNav

[edit]To answer my own question pricing will not be available in December[/edit]
Two things to consider real quick about the t41p/r50p. If you know someone who works for IBM, they can buy them for you at an employee discount, which is 10-15% less (2900 for the t41p and 3500 for the R50p).
Unfortunately I am not lucky enough to know of any IBM employees. Plus, the M375 has 15.4 WUXGA, a feature I'm really drawn too. After that, both models are speced out similarly;that is aside from UltraNav . Everything would come down to cost and performance. I'm not sure if the R50p would greatly outperform this M375E to justify over a potential thousand (plus) dollar difference.

Extra money could purchase new software

The idea of the Gateway m505 is starting to grow on me.
