Any new word about potential new thinkpads tomorrow?

New IBM ThinkPads with ATi 9600

The only thing new on the R50p is that IBM has started listing this model in some of their technical support documents:

http://www.ibm.com/search?en=utf&v=1...=r50p&x=10&y=9

Otherwise, I can find out nothing new even though I have done an extensive search.

Anything new on that IBM? The release date has come and gone...

Unfortunately, nothing came out yesterday. They're adding new things to their T41 laptops all the time; I really think they'll come out with a T41P soon, and I saw a french website that said that the t41p will include the M10. I have e-mailed IBM and called and they know nothing about any T41P, but I'm only talking to general support. I tried to have them connect me to somebody who would know, but they were not cooperative. I sent an e-mail to Chris Hook (some rep at ATI) who usually is helpful. Hopefully he'll confirm whether we'll see this laptop any time soon or not. It's too bad it didn't come out friday; I'm dying to get a new laptop. Their high end T41 has a pretty sweet deal going on now though -- 400 bucks off.

IBM T41p

IBM has started listing model T41p (T41 with ATi 9600) in their Chinese "IBM Mobile Systems ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual":

http://www-6.ibm.com/jp/pc/home/manu...9/a8883252.pdf

As yet, however, there have been no formal announcements of the T41p or the R50p (R50 with ATi9600).

LG-IBM XNote LM50

The LG-IBM XNote LM50 Pentium M laptop with ATi 9600 graphics is now for sale in Korea at several online stores. For example:

http://www.nanote.co.kr/type3/item/s...m_no=568&cha=2

The Korean price of 2800000 is equivalent to $2,368.86 USD.

For this laptop, LG-IBM has claimed a battery life of 6 1/2 hours with the 6 cell battery and 10 hours with the 9 cell battery.

No word yet on if or when this laptop will be offered in the United States.

Maybe we'll see something next week following their sale.

From what I hear they will export to Austrailia, Russia, China, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Israel.

I have heard reports of it presently being for sale in Russia .

Did you get this information directly from LG-IBM? If so, I am disappointed. To me, the XNote LM50 is the best looking laptop with the best battery life of all of the Centrino/ATi 9600 models that have been announced so far. I wonder if LG-IBM is forbidden to sell laptops in the U.S. or Europe as part of a ThinkPad manufacturing deal.

Oh well, I will continue to wait a few more months for the laptop configuration I want at the price I am willing to pay. Getting an XNote LM50 from Australia is certainly a possibility though. I know some Australians have bought Sagers from the U.S.

ATi Mobility Radeon 9600 based on the desktop Radeon 9700?

I found this presentation interesting. It says that the ATi Mobility Radeon 9600 is based on the desktop Radeon 9700 and not on the desktop 9600. See this ATi slideshow for more information:

New IBM ThinkPads officially announced today

New IBM ThinkPad models R50p and T41p were officially announced today:

R50p announcement

The ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 graphics adapter seems to be a version of the Mobility Radeon 9600 with enhanced OpenGL drivers based on this information at ATi about the desktop version:

Here's an article that gives starting prices and other info:

Dell 8600 with ATi 9600

At least the French can buy a Dell 8600 with ATi 9600 graphics:

http://commerce.euro.dell.com/dellst...&bc=i1136&dr=y

It will probably be offered elsewhere soon.

It looks like the IBM T41p is exactly what I was looking for--great battery life and an ATI Radeon9600 (or very similar), except, ouch, $3499 for the base unit! Granted, you can't have everything, but that is some serious cash. That is right about in the price range of a well-equipped Athlon64 laptop, which would have acceptable but lower battery life (about 3 hrs) and a far faster and more versatile CPU.
I am growing more and more wary of Dell though. They have great business support, but everything I hear about their end user support is a horror story, and it took no less than 5 transfers to be able to cancel an order I had placed earlier. Additionally, while I have not used their i8600, the Latitude D600 that I am on now, as well as some of the 5xxx series of notebooks, seem pretty flimsy and have less-than-outstanding keyboards.
If anybody manages to acquire any of these laptops, please do post a review. Free beer for the first reviewer! (well, not really)

IBM 15% shareholder discount

I have heard that IBM offers a 15% discount to shareholders on ThinkPads. If you have some investments, you could always buy 100 IBM shares and hold them long enough to get the discount. Even after the discount, the T41p and R50p prices seem too high unless you need the CAD OpenGL drivers.

It seems to me that IBM has a huge gap in the GPUs they offer with their ThinkPads - 32 MB Radeon 7500, 32 MB Radeon 9000, then 128 MB FireGL T2 (M10/9600 based) with nothing in between. I wonder when they will fill this gap?
I agree. The price seems very high. IBM seems to run sales frequency, and it wouldn't surprise me to see new models surfacing with cheaper, yet improved, graphic alternatives.
