How is the gpu. I see it only has 64mb. Is it better than the 200m?

Definitely better than the 200 M. I can play Unreal Tournament 2004 (an extremely graphics intensive game) at medium settings with very high FPS. You should have no problems unless you are an avid gamer. 64MB is really enough for most games, although some games can see benefit going to 128MB; the bigger concern is the bandwidth, which is not as good as some of the top notch cards.

It all depends on how avid of a gamer you are.

one thing people forgot to mention is that video cards effect battery life. that is, even a 128mb 9700 will drain more juice than intel extreme 2.

I agree. I think you should ge a 128mb card for future games that supports for a 128MB frame buffer ensuring long-term support for next-generation games and applications.

Yeah, I plan to keep this lappy for 3-4 years(high school). So does this mean that the HP is the best choice? BTW, Im also using this as a desktop replacement.

Also, I shouldnt care that about the difference in the 9300's and zv6000's ram clock speed? Also, my graphics card is the Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics. Will the 200m be a step up or would it be about the same?

It will be a step up, but it still wouldn't play games very well. Intel integrated is the absolute dregs of graphics cores though, so really anything will be significantly better. I had Intel extreme-II on one of my old laptops, and it wasn't even able to play an old RTS game (Age of Mythology from 2002) with anything more than a slide show, absolutely horrendous.

a slide show

Actually, I was able to play CS(original) and age of empires (leave me alone ) smoothly with this. I really dont care if I have to turn down all the stuff. I just want it to be played without any glitches. Thats it.

Anybody else want to chime in?

I havn't played the original AOE for a long time; actually, I kind of miss that game. I heard though, AOE-III, when it comes out this fall, will require a card faster than 6800Ultra to run smoothly at maximum resolution; it will break all the boundaries of traditional RTS game in terms of graphics, and will possibly have better physics/rendering engienes better than those of HL2 and UT2004. I can't wait; but that means I will also have to rebuild my desktop before then.

since this has started as a Graphics thread. can ne1 explain ways to extract more out of the Gpu or improve the Gpu itself like overclocking or some setups or anything?

I have another question regarding Ram. If I barely ever go above 450mb of ram, should I even bother going with 1.25gigs or should I just save the extra dough and go with 768? Will I notice a performance boost even if I dont go above 512?

no doubt stay with the dell

compaq is garbage

Yeah, Im pretty much set on the dell but Im still working out the fine details.

Compaq is not garbage and neither is dell. Dell is more on performance and compaq is more on utility.

One thin you can do with more memory, is to turn off swap files. If you only run smaller applications, then 1.25 GB might be large enough to take care of everything, and then there will not be much lag at all due to swapping in windows, and you might even save some life span from your HDD by reducing its work, hence its heat output.
