Upgrading CPU

Thread Starter
I have a Toshiba Satellite A65-S126 and I want to upgrade the CPU. Can anyone tell me how I can find what CPU is compatable. I tryed to contact Toshiba but they just told me that if I wanted to upgrade it that they would do it for a "NOMINAL FEE"

Thanks In Advance

Laptops in general are not very upgradeable other than memory, HDDs and possibly CD-RWs/DVD-RWs. CPUs are hardwired to the motherboard (no sockets). Same reason you cant upgrade Video and sound cards (unless you use a PMCIA type)

you can upgrade CPU but it will cost you a lot of money. I mean if the CPU is worth 250$ you will be most likely have to pay around 500$ to install it because as the saugen48 said it is hard wired to your computer, you can't just change it, you have to send it back to Toshiba and will want you money

I have never changed any CPU on any Toshiba, but I have changed a few on other laptops. Many laptop CPUs are plug-in, rather than soldered. You can usually upgrade to the fastest CPU that is supported by any model that shares the same BIOS.

Thats what I feared. So I guess its not worth it.

Thanks for your help

Probably not since it'll be a real challenge trying to get in there and change it yourself and I would think that such a major operation would void whatever warranty you have. And having it done seems prety pricy.

in a a15-s129

Yup have to agree it is generally a piece of cake. Most modern laptop motherboards have ZIF sockets, so it is just a case of ensuring you buy the right type of CPU and swapping out the slower one with the faster one. Upgraded a few laptops without problems.

Do also bear in mind, the faster the processor the more heat it is going to generate so do be sure that the original heatsink and fan can cope with the additional heat. Using a good thernal paste such as Arctic Silver helps too.

Nope, because they are fundamentally different processor types. Your only choice is a Pentium 4, and even then it also depends on what type of Pentium 4.

sounds good,,,,so theorticly I could throw the fastest cpu that is offered in the Pentium 4 M lineup.

Theoretically yes. I tried it and it worked out fine. Be sure to make sure to have the latest BIOS from Toshiba flashed onto your laptop. It is also advisable to use a good thermal paste such as Arctic Silver instead of the generic stuff.

FYI - the fastest P4-M is the SL6WZ, which runs at 2.6Ghz. There are auctions on eBay for them from time to time.
