X700, X600, 9700?

I'm looking for a notebook that will be decent for games (I'm currently hooked on WoW), but still fairly portable with an AMD 64 bit processor. From what I've read, one with an X700 processor would be my 'high end' decision... one with a 9700 my low end, or maybe an X600? Is that as good as a 9700?

I haven't been able to find the perfect machine with the 64 bit processor yet and I could really use some suggestions. I'd like to spend less than $2000... a bit bit less if possible

I've been looking a lot at Acer.

Great.. thanks for the comparison of the X600 to the 9700.
Now I need laptop suggestions

I'm not Absolutely wedded to the idea of an Athlon 64, but I'd prefer it...

Actually the X600 is clocked a bit faster than the MR9700

Hey, Krista, seems like you are in the same boat as I am. I would suggest checking out the Mayhem G3. Also the Sager 4720 or Sager 7620. Try different sites to configure these to your price range, but these can all support the 9700 and, except for the 7620 I think, support AMD athlon 64s for under $2000. Good luck!

Forget about the AMD 64 and get yourself a Acer Travelmate 8103 and add another stick of 512MB, you can't really get more bang for your buck.

How does an ATI X300 128mb card (as bundled in the Dell Inspiron 9300 - with the 128mb being full-dedicated memory) compare with an ATI M11 9700 128mb graphics card?

The X300 is more like a MR9600.

I've definately looked at the Mayhem G3, but the screen resolution seems kind of low doesn't it?

They don't sell Sager on Newegg but I'll look around for them.

Why should I forget about the AMD 64? Especially when Longhorn will be out shortly and when future programs will be written to 64 bit.... and when I can get that chip for less than intel's stuff, and it usually kicks intel's butt?

I've looked at the 8103 and seriously considered it... but if I can find a machine with similar specs with the 64, I'll get that.

I'm not adverse to getting a machine with a 6600 or 6800, I just know more about the ATI and ATI boards are in more of the machines I've been looking at so far.

AMD 64 would be very useful if you are planning on using any type of scientific, statistical, coding, engineering or gaming software in the future. Since Win XP 64 is already out, these will be the first areas where 64 bit applications come in, probably starting within the next 6 months.

But if all you do is surf web and using MS Word, then there would be no need for you to get 64 bit for a long time to come. The LongHorn ( which is planned for release about 1 year from now) will have a 64 bit version that has all of the performance advantages and full functionality, and a crippled 32-bit version for backward compatibility with older machines. Again, if you don't use any advanced or specialized software, the 32 bit version will probably do fine. But if you are a serious computer user, then 64 bit will soon be indispensible for you.

Tell us more about what you will actually use the computer for, and we can then give you better advice.

Thanks Wiz

I would, but unfortunately PCI-express graphics cards apparently hog the PCI buss (particularly high-end PCI-E graphics cards, like the 6800), to the detriment of other data, and I need the PCI buss open for other stuff (heavy music production).

Unless you are using some specific application that will have a 64bit release real soon. Having a 64bit OS will not do you a bit of good when you are mostly running 32bit apps and games. By the time 64bit apps/games are common. I'll be on my next laptop or the one after.

Rather than building myself a new desktop (as my old one is still fairly functional) I was going to get a higher end laptop that I could also use for games. I think I mentioned I'm currently playing World of Warcraft. I want it to be able to handle that very nicely as well as games that will be coming out for awhile, which is why I figured I shouldn't get less than a 9700, but I don't think I want to pay what it would take to get an X800 or equivalent.

I'm a Webmaster, so I do a lot of internet stuff... some office applications. I want to watch movies, burn DVDs, etc. Pretty much an all around good machine, though I doubt a screamer is necessary.

I don't go through computers as fast as some people. The 64 bit OS with be fairly well used within the next year, I think. I doubt I'll be looking for a new laptop for at least three years.

Though I've found a couple games that I like, I'm not big on the most common ones these days which seem to be pure shooters or hack and slash type stuff. World of Warcraft I like because I have friends and family there... the scenery is fantastic and the quests are somewhat fun

My ol' Athlon 1700XP with a gforce 2 graphics card and 512 meg RAM is still serving me fairly well as a basic machine that can do some gaming (it does handle WoW with only a few sputters) but I know I either need to build myself a new box or get a higher end laptop... since my old ebay purchase laptop that was strictly for wi-fi/internet access, etc. has died, I figured I might as well go with the laptop.

The turion is the next step in their 64 bit processors? Hmm... Maybe the others will go down in price when that comes out too I think I can wait awhile longer.
