If I could just borrow this thread with a similar post.

After having been on this board for more than 2 months and generally just reading the posts on Sager notebooks and enjoying the occasional light banter amongst the folks here, I've finally made my own order. The specs I've chosen are:

SVGA+ screen: my eye sight isn't so good anymore, so the lower resolution is actually a benefit for me.

Processor: P4 2.66GHZ/533FSB - the next step up was commanding a large premium

Custom Color: Standard Grey/Blue - no funds for the little 'extras'

RAM: 512MB (Single DIMM) - this machine will not work with anything less.

Hard Drive: 40GB 5400RPM - cheap upgrade from the 4200 RPM HDD for a noticeable enough boost - I hope.

... and the rest are from the standard configuration.

The unit pricing is US$1886, but taking into account the tax I'll be paying later, and also shipping costs, it'll work out to roughly US$2091 or so by my calculations.

Just to give people a comparative idea, over here, the DELL Inspiron 8200 equivalent with the above specs but the UXGA screen and the P2.4 GHz mobile processor would have cost S$4109, or US$2348.

===

Now, the order was made just 10 minutes ago on a cool Saturday afternoon; and I wonder if I'm the first person from Singapore to order from Sager (for those not in the know, Singapore is a very tiny island resting along the equator in South-East Asia). I'd be most interesting to see when the unit will arrive and the condition it comes in, as armed with this information, I'll certainly be reporting to other local discussion rooms here. As a general rule, folks here buy Acer, DELL, Fujitsu, Sony, IBM and Toshiba notebooks - and it'd be great to upset that whole tidy arrangement when I cart around a spanking new 5660 and make people start regretting those purchases.

Also, I've got a digital camera set up over here, so if Adam would like (as he's mentioned in another post), I'd be more than happy to take plenty of pictures of the unit when it arrives.

The countdown begins!

Hey Rob, what's it like over there in Singapore? I spent a few months researching moving over there after I graduate, and was really interested... and then Singapore had an economic downfall (worse than the US)... and then Sept. 11 happened. Being a Christian Texan, I had pretty much decided to can that idea for my own safety. How is it now?

Heh - well this hasn't anything to do with Sager, but I'd be glad to reply with some of my observations. I'd initially figured I'd send you a pmail, but decided to post my thoughts as a new thread at the Off-topic forum instead.

OK it's done; right here:

Oh crap, I totally forgot about tax.

Wait what? Tax? That .. must be because you're in singpore, right?

Good choices...very close to what I would have chosen, had I had the money a few months back. The only difference is I would have gone with 2.4 GHz just because it's cheaper. And 233 mhz doesn't mean that much to me. Now, though, I think i'd wait for another ... 4, 5 months. All this talk of new arrivals makes me anxious.

I think Singapore is a city .. and a nation? I'll have to double check on that. If that's true, the population density is bigger than that of Taiwan, which means that the two previous posts I've been saying about high population density in Taiwan I've been lying. Hrm.

I believe Vatican City is actually the smallest country. But why am I sharing this useless information.

Here's a note.

I've just received the confirmation of order from Adam, and there's a line that says: expected date of shipment is 21st Feb, Tuesday.

Say, does that mean my *precious* will leave PCTorque on the 21st, or I can expect to receive it on the 21st...?

Nah, that's unlikely - but hey, it's good to hope.

Well, Adam's just sent an email saying that my unit's shipped about 7 hours ago; once I've received its tracking number - and according to the web site it'll be sent by the end of the next working day - I can start counting down the hours to opening up a nice big box. I've set up a small stub web site for pictures and the like, and will be taking pictures for the entire process through. Hey, maybe the UPS guy will even stay long enough for me to take a picture with him with the Sager box right in front... now, wouldn't that be a treat!

hey let us know what day you receive it... i'm curious to know how long it takes to get halfway around the world.
Well, according to UPS, if it shipped today (early Tuesday morning) in the States, then it should get here either on Thursday, or latest by Friday according to the mode of shipping I chose. It could be worse I guess - I ordered a DELL Inspiron 3800 some years back, and even though the assembly factory is just next door in the neighbouring country (in Malaysia), it still took 3 full working days from order to delivery.

Here's the stub page I'll be posting up the review later on: http://wzierbovsky.mysitespace.com/. I'll be duplicating the contents here at the review forums, but needed a quick/free web host that allows off server linking of images, and this one seemed fine. There's practically nothing on that site yet (except for the LINKS page) as I haven't had time to really do much to spruce it up.

Hey, great!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking the same, a home page for my Sager 8886
I hope to have time for it but I will try!!!
We are all waiting for your 5660 to come and see the page. jejejeje

LOL Wzierbovsky, now that's what I call ready to go. After your review, you have to post a link to it in the review section here.

Duh! After receiving my tracking number from Adam about 14 hours ago, I've been following its progress at the UPS web site every hour or so (and don't I have more busier things to do :P).

Just 10 minutes ago after, I nearly received a heartattack after reading the status flagged as "EXCEPTION" at the summary details page - for a moment I thought some stooopid terrorist had decided to hijack my plane, of all planes. But as it turns out, my **precious** is in Osaka right now because of a short plane delay; now, why did UPS have to stop at Osaka at all...? Why couldn't it do a direct flight here...?!!!???

Still, Osaka is about 7 hours flight away, and after making a call to UPS over here, I was advised it'll be arriving in Singapore latest tomorrow morning.

OK - so, do I qualify as a Sager Fan-Boy now with this obsession...? Hey, there's a certain ring to that term.

Hey Rob, if you want a gallery site, you can use mine... I plan to post pics of my 5660 when it arrives, probably the same way as you. (pic of the tracking page on UPS, pic of the UPS guy, pic of the box, pic of me opening the box, pic of me passed out from all the excitement...)

Check it out:

OK thanks for the offer allbad - I'll keep it in mind. I have my own domain name and server as well, but I have one of those things about disassociating my "net" identity to my real identity.

In any event, I'm incrementally adding more things to my review web site at the above link, and it seems to work fine at the moment. My main concern will be later when I link the images from that free account to Sager forums over here. While the TOA for mysitespace hasn't said anything specific about this yet (or I could have missed it!), in the event that my review web site is removed by server administration, I'll need your assistance in hosting it then.

One more thing - I've got a digital video camera set up over here and have done simple video editing and encoding. I was briefly toying with the idea of recording video of the Sager 5660 and placing it on the review web site - just that I'm not sure what folks would like to see. And of course, the bandwidth consideration too.
