600m Hardrive clicking noise

Just got my 600m a week ago and have already noticed a clicking noise from the hard drive. It seems to happen when the system is idle about every 15-20 seconds. I haven't noticed any performance issues and ran a scan disk which returned no bad results.

Has anyone else experienced this with their 600m/laptop and 0ther than the annoyance, is this something I should be concerned with? Is there anything I can do to try and fix it?

Thanks in advance

it sucks i have it with the 700m hitachi 5400-call dell, tell them you want to return it for refund, get the 100 concession coupon and buy the 7200 rpm hitachi.
it clicks too but its fast (er)

My mom has a 700m and it sounds like a freakin coffee pot percolating. It goes "mmm click gurggle click click". I cant really explain the noise other than that. I actually brought hers home with me so I can call Dell and complain on her behalf. I have worked with a enough laptop HDDs to know this is NOT normal. Its like the arms that scan the platters on the HDD are continually resetting themselves or something.

there is a hitachi "fix" (cant find it right now but do a search in the forums) that requires install into bios-I did it and notice absolutely no difference but (theoretically) allows you to control hd by acoustic or performance modes.
waiting for seagate 100gb to settle in price and replacing hitachi.
Other fix is always play music and you can't hear it-lol.

Thanks for the replies. According to the specs of my laptop it has a western digital:

HARD DRIVE, 80G, 9.5MM, 5.4K, WESTERN DIGITAL, SCORPIO, LEAD FREE

Its not terrible, but when you pay so much for a laptop you start to get picky.

You might want to see if western digital offers some kind of utility on their web site that adjusts settings that would change this - similar to the hitatchi's feature tool.

There was a recent fimware upgrade for these drives that supposedly addresses this issue. Let us know if it really stops the clicking:

Thanks for the heads-up. Now I don't feel like I was imagining things. I'm gonna try this out tonight.
