3ds max or maya?
wow..what a way to start a flame war by cg app users =D
good thing your not on a forum like cgtalk er something...this thread would be 400-500 pages long by now. but to generalize things for you heres a breakdown of which applications dominate which markets:
Maya - Feature length film
3dsmax - game industry
Lightwave - Commercial advertising
SoftImage - breaking into feature length movies
Now of course there is cross over from each of these apps into the different catagories and who ever you talk to is going to give you their perspective on it. myself, im a lightwave user. why? because its what i started with. which brings me to my next point.
Use the program thats right for you. most every 3d package has a trial version or at least a limited version. softimage will send you a box filled with the cds and tutorials. maya you can download. they are inhibited versions and wont grant you access to everything, but youll get a taste before you decide to drop money on something.
An inevitability: the first program you use and learn will more often then not remain the one you use throughout the rest of your CG days. the program does not make the artist. for proof look on cgtalk.com ... various users from all different applications with truly awe inspiring results.
Last note: take your time. go slow. start simple. if you rush into a full blown scene with characters, story plot, atmosphere, animation, etc. you will never finish and youll be incredibly disappointed with whatever results you may achieve. find a community.. .strike that... find a friendly
community to interact with..but id recommend lurking there first in order to see the in and outs.
Hope this helps. oh..and above all else ...results, failure, admiration,... whatever...HAVE FUN otherwise whats the point?
