I also bought 2 sticks of Transcend 1 GB DDR2 533 mhz RAM from newegg. Running Memtest+ 1.51 for 21 hours 14 min, I got no errors over 23 passes. My memory is ok.

2 Sticks of 1GB Transcend...Ran Memtest for ~6 hours, 0 errors over 6 passes....One of these days I'll attempt a longer run, but so far so good.

No Errors as well

I completed 7 passes with no errors for 2GB total memory.

It's Nero 6.x. I burned it 3 or 4 times and tried using it as a boot CD on both my desktop and laptop.

Edit: Used my 9300 to burn the ISO and now it works, go figure.

Just out of curiosity, is everyones Ram getting real hot when they are running memtest?

Heck yes!
Maybe the heat is the problem with the Transcend sticks getting errors, because so far no one who has ran a single stick of Transcend Ram has gotten errors, according to the poll, but some people who are running two get errors, this could be a possibility...

I have two, they were very hot after 7 passes, yet I had no errors.

Well not everyone got them, 9 people out of 29 who were using two GB sticks did though, however 0 people out of 16 who ran one stick got errors, according to the poll.

Edit: If it is heat maybe it is the surface that the notebook is kept on? Like a wood table, glass table, coffee table, etc

Yep ! Without any cooling, the RAM (in fact the entire bottom of the 9300) gets pretty hot to touch ... especially the RAM.

The heat is definitely getting the problem worse ... but any decent stick should be able to tolerate at least this much heat.

When I run the test with the laptop sitting on one of these, I still get errors, but not until the 7th or 8th pass. Also, if I run the test while the laptop is in a colder room, the number of errors is less.

However, when I try with my stock Dell memory ... cooling or no cooling, it works perfectly with no errors.

I was getting errors with my two original Transcend 1GB sticks from Newegg. RMA'd them for two more and these two are actually worse ... I got upto 80 errors during one pass of test# 6

I have RMA'd these two sticks as well and ordered a final pair from Newegg. If these last two sticks also show error, I will have to return this and buy some other memory. I would really like to get the Crucial, but those are like $170 a piece

I am now getting afraid if this a problem with my 9300 itself ! Oh well !

[IMPORTANT UPDATE]

May 17,2005 : IMPORTANT UPDATE
----------------------------------

After going thru 4 pairs (8 individual sticks) of these Transcend 1GB DDR2 533 PC4200 memory modules from Newegg, I have FINALLY found a pair that works perfectly in my 9300 ... over 20 passes in Memtest86+ with no errors so far. All the previous 6 sticks were using the ELPIDA Memory Chips ... and they would ALL give multiple errors in Memtest86+ whether used one at a time or two at a time (in dual channel).

The final two sticks (that are working perfectly so far) use Micron Memory Chips. It is no secret that Micron makes some of the best memory chipset out there, so I am not very surprised that these are working fine while all the previous ones failed (I have never heard of ELPIDA).

Anyway, Newegg now seems to be stocking the Micron Memory Chipset based Transcend 1GB DDR2 533 PC4200 sticks ... so if you see similar errors as mine, get yours RMA'd.

I have updated the original post in this thread with detailed pictures of both the "good" and "bad" modules so you can verify what you have.

Last, but certainly not the least, if whatever you have is working perfectly for YOU (meaning no errors in memtest86+) then regardless of the chipset type I'd recommend sticking with whatever you got. Each machine is different and each one works better (or worse) with a particular memory ... so don't replace yours unless you are truly getting errors ... oterhwise you may regret it.

Mine are ELPIDA (the ones mentioned above - 10 passes, 0 errors). ELIPIDA are a very large RAM chip supplier, suprised you havn't heard of them. Last I heard they were set to supply the RAM for the PS3 along with Toshiba and Samsung as weel as some of the other next gen consoles. Micron are very good though (wouldn't say the best, but the best budget certainly - supply crucial etc or did the last time I checked)...

Also, I wouldn't worry about the heat, the chips are stable up to 95˚C.

Great observation PSXJunky. Now all I have to do is wait for my Gen2 to arrive - the 2 sticks I got from newegg were Micron (yaaah). We shall see.

By the way what's the diff between the memtest86- and memtest86+ ?

Hmm ... it is good to know that ELPIDA is actually a well known RAM chip manufacturer; somehow I never heard of them.

What I mentioned here is simply what my experience has been with ELPIDA based memory modules and my 9300. I fully expect that this is kind of a YMMV situation ... but I wanted to give a heads up if anyone else is seeing something similar.

The ELPIDA based Transcend modules simply did not work for me ... I went thru thorough tests of 6 of these and each and every one of those resulted multiple errors in Memtest86+ (whether used as a single stick or used as a pair in dual channel). On the contrary, the very first pair of Micron based Transcend modules that I tried is running for close to 24 hours now and not a single error.

So it is just my guess at this point that if someone else has a sensitive 9300 like I do, you just may have better luck with a Micron based module.

By the way, it is not that Micron is just a supplier of RAM chips for Crucial memory, Crucial Technology (as a company) is a division of Micron itself.

Quick question,
I just installed my 1GB transcend a couple of days ago and run memtest86 last night. I left the laptop on all night long and when I woke up in the morning... or noon , I got one error after 18 passes. Is this something I need to worry about or did I just run the memtest for too long?
Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm kind of new to this thing. Thanks.

Ideally speaking, you should not get even a single error by running Memtest86 for any length of time. However, if you got only one error in 18 passes, chances are fairly slim that this would actually show up as a proble when using the laptop normally.

However, since you got the error once, I would recommend running Memtest once again for a period of 24 hours and see how many error (if any) you are getting.

I'll try again tonight.. Thanks.

I ran memtest again and man.. this thing really gets freakin hot..
Yesterday I only got one error on pass 18, but today I got 2 errors already on the first pass at 57%. Before I thought it was my dell stick. I removed it and left the 1gb transcend installed and start getting the errors. As I'm typing right now, the test is at 67% with 3 errors.

How many passes did you guys do after you claim that you didn't get any errors at all? I guess now I can claim that I'm the first person who got errors on 1Gb transcend.
