not receiving power from pwr supply

my 8887 is dead in the water. 1) the low power beep started, 2) checked power cord, 3) i was/am properly plugged in, everything is seated, 4) moved to different outlet with no change, 5) checked light on power brick: light is green, 7)dead sager.

the charge light at the bottom the lcd is also dead. really need some help, have two rush jobs i'm working on that have to be outta the door by morning.

EDIT: it is now about 5 minutes later and the charge light has mysteriously decided to light up again. why i am now receiving power is beyond me. hopefully it stays this way...

Recommendation gr8gatzby, get a second power adaptor. If you rely on your system, a second one makes good economic sense.

You may also care to take note of my observations about powering up switch mode power supplies (particularly for high powered laptops like the Sager) here.

Normally the power bricks blow internal fuses if something drastic goes wrong, the fact that yours came back on points to a thermal cutout which I doubt the power bricks have (guessing there - it depends on the model).

Was the power brick hotter than normal? From my 8890 they get warm but not hot. I can hold mine in my hand quite comfortably (I have both the new totally enclosed type made in Taiwan and the US made model with the open vents).

The other thought is a dodgey DC connector inside the laptop. Due to mechanical strain, shock, insertion pressure one of the solder joints may have fractured. Try moving the connector and see if that affects it. My old Sparc Britelite had that problem. I had to replace the internal power supply.

the brick seemed no warmer than normal...probably should get a fallback. without that baby ima brought to a halt. had no idea that the power supplies were so fragile...

The high current ones (like our ones) just need a bit of care. You have to remember you could be pulling up to 6 amps thru that sucker.

The main thing I saw from many years of use with my Sun Britelite (which used to suck the grid dry ) was fuse blows due to inrush current. I probably went thru 3 bricks in the 10 years I had that monster. And a loose internal connector.

Given the power connectors are very similar I thought it might help everyone get a bit more life out of them.

Some users had reported on loose pins on the laptop (or power cord) side of things... gently check and see if the pins all look fine.

If one is wiggling and not making proper contact, it could mean intermittent failures.

Always have a backup plan!

Can't say I know what it is... if you haven't already, contact SAGER and open a case (or whatever) with them... you are still under warranty, maybe they'll replace the mobo and solve everything?

Do you have a voltmeter and experience with using one?

until my 8887 returns, a friend of mine let me borrow his old powermac G3/300(pre apple ugly transluscent plastics) and it owns! reuniting myself with OS9 and man it's fast! jane get me off this crazy thing! the utter simplicity of this old school OS is something about which i've forgotten. migrating to OSX was nice and introduced stability to the mac, but we all were thrust into the complex world of UNIX with a candy coated shell. OS9 leaves no room for err. it just works. i really miss this...not having to worry....sigh
