about to make the jump ...

Thread Starter
I am a tech person, CTO :-) ... I have my work Dell D610 which I am happy with. However its just too big at times. I seem to be spending more time these days needing a small laptop for Starbucks surfing!

I started to look at a small Sony, Fujitsu etc - however thought I should consider apple as well. I have never used a Mac, although I have an ipod which I love and have started to like the idea behind Mac;s however been worried due to compability issues etc coming from a Windows world.

My questions are as follows:

1. If I get the 12inch Powerbook G4 what is the equal P4 laptop spec?

2. How much memory should you get ? 1gb is standard for me under windows these days - is that the same with OSX ?

3. Is getting a 7200 drive worth it ?

4. Anyone good links to good reviews of the new Powerbook G4

Thanks

You can't compare the two processors like that as they're completely different. Though I don't think it would be to inappropriate to say the ratio would be something like 1:1.5.

OS X likes as much ram as you can get. 512 is the minimum I would get, any more would be sweeter. iBooks can only take 1.25 max, currently, though it's rumoured they will be upgraded to 512 standard taking them up to 1.5 max.

You can get one but good luck putting it in. iBooks and PowerBooks are a PITA to open. It will speed the system up, no doubt, however.

Most links right now are reviews of OS X being that the last revisions of both the i and PowerBooks were mostly speed bumps. What do you want to know?

kakaze said mostly everything i would bet.

os x likes ram like crazy, so you would be no fool to get a gig, at least no less than 512.

the 7200 drive is very much worth it. i got the 7k60 for my laptop and never regretted it, 4200rpm loading times can turn your computer into a DOG. I mean, the boot times as well as loading times for apps and especially games. So yes, go for it.

CPU comparison is about 1 to 1.6 like kazee said, simply because P4 is an old dog and lately the only thing they could do was bust out more clockspeed to increase its performance levels. the G4 is more efficient (roughly on par with AMD64 or P-M) thus it does not need as high of clockspeed. Don't be fooled though, a G4 will not run faster than AMD64 4000+ or P4EE 64-bit @ 3.4+

My god, abf actually being helpful.

I almost feel sorry for telling him to stab himself in the crotch with a fork.

Almost.
