so im in collage and i dont feel like spending 75 bucks on a copy of XP home(plus i want pro) and ive seen some posts around here about academic discount's, so im wondering, where are people getting these crazy prices($7.75!) cause my university doesnt offer that kinda thing....tech support here says they offer "great deals on XP home, only $120".........blah....so if anyone knows....

If you search the web you can find XP pro upgrade for ~$75-80. You can still do clean installs with XP Pro Upgrade, just get a win 98 CD and it will ask you to insert it real quick. You don't even need the win98 CD key. (Win 2000 CDs work as well I believe).

Find someone who attends the University of Florida - as they seem to have the sweetest deal ($5/disc, I think) and they can mail it to ya!

Also, there are places online that offer discounts (google it) but nothing like $5/disc (which may be a CD-R copy - legally w/ key, etc).

You have friends in other universities? Check with them (usually at the university book store or tech place).

Academic Disc's

Hmmm, what is your school's tuition reimbursement rules? Sign up for a business class, order software, drop out a week later, ebay baby! I think I may be on to something! How many Colleges and Universities are there in this great nation (at least 300+ that play Div I hoops)?

That's why you find a NON-COMPUTER type friend and have them buy you their copy... repeat as often as you like (how many students outside of the computer/technical majors are buying an OS or OFFICE suite?)

That's most likely a msdn academic alliance offering.. usually only offered to people in the computer science department.. Im at Santa Fe COmmunity college(in gainesville too) and they have it where you can go to the lab at school and pick up the disks you check out for a week to install make copy etc.. or you can order it to be shipped for i think 5 bucks + shipping

My school (University of Washington Seattle) has the same deal. Rather nice . . . for me at least. Office isn't part of the deal, unfortunatly.

I have heard that the Electrical Engeneering department gets office though . . . .

It even makes a great advertisement for the department, there are people that take the intro to computer science classes just for the software. Not that we need advertisements, admissions are already highly exclusive.
