Anything that conducts electricity will be fine. It's simply a pull down to ground so the current through the wire will only be a few milliamps at most (probably microamps). Assuming ~3V and at least a 1 kOhm internal resistance the current would be less than 3 mA. No worries

I DID IT!!!!

Yup another successfull pinmod! I followed the instructions in this thread and it all came out great! Thnx WHY0WHY!!!

The wire is reaaaaaaly small. Sometimes I couldn't even see it..
It isn't that hard to do, so i recommend doing this mod to everybody!

hey - i tried to read all the threads here, but i only have ONE concern (already oc'ed my vid card with copper heatsinks, to 460mhz on a pro turbo, and As5'ed the cpu)
This works on a 400mhz FSB board (i8600) or is it only for the 533 boards with a 400 chip with the mod?
if its for all dothans @ 400 im SO doing this tonight, 2132mhz here i come!

You can only do it on computers with the 915 chipset which supports 533 MHz FSB.

i read that i might be able to get something out of it, with different pins BLCK instead of BEL?
anyway, what could i get out of it, and how would i do it?
Or is there anyway i can get a 915 into the 8600?

Update on my pin mod status... I switched the 1.5GHZ from my compal c56 (there was a pentium m 1.5GHZ inside it) and I was able to pin mod it. But the 1.5GHZ that I bought from ebay would not boot up after being pin modded...it was faulty I guess. But it would boot up and work fine in the c56...so I guess I have an odd pin mod, but at least I'm running @ 2.0GHZ now :-).

I dont get how putting a simple pin makes yoru Computer 400-500 mHZ Faster!? how is that possible, just that little pin makes your computer run faster? Also can this be done on my current Specs? is the 1.6 chip 400 mHZ?

The chipset supports 533 MHz FSB, right? When you pinmod the 400 MHz FSB, the chipset cannot detect that it is 400 MHz, and assumes it is 533 MHz FSB.

533 MHz FSB = 133.25x4
400 MHz FSB = 100x4

Pentium 1.6 stock: 16x100 = 1600 MHz
Pentium 1.6 pinmod 16x133.25 = 2132 MHz!

Get it?

At least another guy says he gets a 9*C drop, seeming to confirm that applying AS has a big effect. But then there are some people who claim that the difference experienced is next to nothing (say, 1*, or a couple of degrees only).
I have been wondering if there is a way to explain these very different results. I noticed in the guide that you scraped thermal tape off BOTH the GPU chip and the cooling gear. Was there in your case used two pieces of tape (which could explain the big drop in this case) or were you talking about removing residues of one and the same piece of tape?

Someone should post a list of exactly which processors can be used. Tons of people on these two threads ask that same question a million times, and the answer is always 7x5 series. Well, to those of us who have been loyal to AMD for years, that doesn't mean much of anything. I think I am logical enough to figure out that a 1.6 dothan 725 2mb cache 400fsb @ 90nm is what I am looking for, but if someone were to just flat out say "these chips will probably work" "these chips will probably not work" would be kinda helpful. I miss the days when a chip was just called what it is, none of this "PM 730" and "XP 3500+" jargon flying around.

Secondly, if anyone reads both of the guides listed at the start of this post, you'll see that the authors jumped DIFFERENT PINS! Yes, I was quite shocked and amazed. But, it makes perfect sense that there is a ground above and a ground to the left of the critical pin, and all you need is a ground on that pin, so essentially they are the same thing. Dont freak out and have your blood pressure skyrocket or anything.

Ditto. I had a mad panic when I saw another thread with a diagram showing different pins being jumpered to what I did But I calmed down quickly after realising there were more than a few Vss pins around and the obvious fact that my mod was working just fine BEFORE I saw the alternate pin jumpering method

ok so I have a 1.6 chip 400mhz 2mb, and did the pin mod and cpu-z is showing 798mhz... the bios shows 2.13ghz. What should I do?

It's just clock throttling like it's supposed to. Load up Prime and watch it spike up to 2.13.

HOw do you get the f'n palmrest off?

Im following the dell guides but it doesnt work..

removed 7 from the top side, 12 from the bottom, dc'ed the touchpad and led but it wont come off.

Seems to be connect in the lower left hand side next to the touch pad.
I dont wanna rip it off :/
