A Photo Guide for Pin Modding 9300/XPS and Applying AS5 to GPU - Page 71

Hey guys. I happen to have a big overclocking question for the 7950 go gtx. I'm planning on opening the whole m1710 up tommorow and replacing the t7600 with a g one, along with AS5ing the crap outta stuff and putting in two new fans.
MY questions are (GC oriented);
What can I do about the Video Card Ram Chips? They definately get steaming. Is it safe to apply AS5 to them? Can I add extra to make up for the thickness of any thermal pads I find? Should I leave the thermal pads on? Use them in conjunction with the AS5? Or forget even taking the video card out all together? (This is to achieve lower temps with the new fans I have and higher clock rates now that my cpu will be able to process more fps to the video card to compose.)
and Second
Would there be anything else I could do to lower the temps of the ram? (such as a fan blowing inside, etc. anything creative if it turns out that taking the card apart isn't that wise after all.).
And finally, where would one buy thermal pads anyways? I can't seem to find them anywhere really accessible.

Thanks for your help mates. I really do.
appreciate it.

this thread isn't actually about your question, but i will do my best.
don't as5 the crap out of anything, it only takes a very small amount and if you use too much it will increase your temperatures. you cant use a glob to take up space or use as5 directly on anything other that where the cpu/gpu meet the heat sink.
the best cooling is actually taking your computer once a month and using a vacuum and caned air clean all the crap out, that is why you are running hot probably.

personally, i wouldnt do any as5 anything if i where you based on your questions, you might do more harm than good. and as5 doesnt offer much, maybe a degree or 2 which isnt enough for the effort imho. just clean your machine, be careful.

This guide shows you how to replace your existing 533fsb CPU with a 400fsb CPU that you have purchased elsewhere (eBay seems to be the best choice.)
I wanted to write a hands on guide with pictures for doing the pinmod and applying thermal compound to the GPU. I recommend Arctic Silver compound. For the CPU, you must have a 400Mhz bus Pentium M. They are readily available on eBay. Be careful, they come in cache sizes of 512K, 1MB and 2MB. I purchased my 2MB, 1.6 CPU for $129 on a buy it now.

Here is a link to another guide. It is better written and more technical than mine.

Another Good PinMod Tutorial

This is a link to Dell’s very good documentation. Follow the steps there, I am not going to rewrite them, because they are good. But I will include some real pics.

Dell Technical Docs for the 9300

Dell Technical Docs for the XPS2

OK, now on to the good stuff. First open your screen all the way and use a small screwdriver to pop the hinge cover. This was the hardest part of the operation. It was a biatch and didn’t want to come off. Slide in the side first as pictured, make sure you get a good pop. Then, place the screwdriver inside the first hinge and pop it off, should be easy from there.

Follow the rest of Dell’s instructions. Here are some pictures at various stages:

Now prepare your jumper wire. I cut a lead off of a dead power supply and used a small piece of aluminum wire from that. This thing is SMALL. Here is a pic for reference:

Once you have removed the CPU cooler, take a razor blade and clean the thermal pad off. After you have cleaned the pad off, iso
propyl alcohol is the best method to clean off the residue. Please refer to the below link on the proper way to apply thermal compound. Both the CPU and GPU cooler could stand to be lapped (smoothing them with sandpaper), but you will have to look elsewhere for a guide on that

Arctic Silver Application Tutorial

Here is a pic of the cooler after applying compound. It looks rough, but it has been rubbed in good. I did use the bag method to rub compound into the cooler, the surface was pretty rough.

Here is a picture of the socket with the jumper in. It is the 3rd set of pins down on row 15 and 16. It is clearly labeled at the top of the socket. The other guide I linked at the top has different pins jumped, they both work because the jumper is just grounding the pin. Either way will work properly.

Here is the CPU inserted with compound applied properly.

Put the cooler back on and that is done!

Doing the GPU

Remove the screws around the GPU. You do NOT have to unseat the card. Now, take a Torx driver and loosen the 4 screws around the heatsink itself. This is a smaller than normal Torx, mine is labeled T-8. Most “computer toolkits” have a driver with 2 sizes, this is smaller than either of those. Here is a pic of the cooler removed and with the thermal tape scraped off.

Here is the cooler with compound rubbed in.

Here is the GPU after cleaning off the thermal tape. You MUST do this before applying compound. I wound up gently using my fingernail. Hope you don’t bite your nails

Here it is with compound applied properly.

Also, a word of warning on the GPU heatsink screws. Be sure they actually catch. When I started turning, some of them felt like they were in, but they never caught properly. It will crank down pretty tight when they actually catch. It is spring loaded, so you shouldn't be able to overtighten. Put it all back together and that’s it!

Here is a screenie of my 1.6, 400fsb, 2MB cache chip at 2.13.

Applying compound to the GPU dropped my idle temps from 49C to 41C. Worth it while you are in there. Feel free to post any questions. Hope it helps some folks.

Why0Why
I CPU (1.6M) and follow instruction and get it done, but still shows as 1.6M?

Ok probably a noob question but i have a 700m with the 855 chipset is it possible to mod/upgrade to the 915 chipset. My guess is no so is there any other way to OC my laptop?

Just fyi, I just finished taking the entire thing apart and globbing AS5 and such, it might be not as good, but it's a HELL of a lot better then what they have in there. I'll be making a guide soon for it, I installed an extra video card fan as well and AS5ed the Gpu (you need a t-8 torx bit, instrument sized (they look like the star of david slightly kind of bits, you also need to warm up the radiator since it sticks to the gpu like glue, because they use the same crap (pathetic phase change pads) everywhere save the ram and northbridge. My temps are down 15 degrees. I'd say it's quite worth it.

Ughhh probably not man unless you have a different custom mobo, maybe someone else has an idea about it.

You would need a new motherboard. That's where most people let the mod die because of price and more importantly its usually not possible.

Can someone please put the photos (topic start) back online? I get red cross pictures.

Hi. I was wondering if you could help me with my pin modding on a 9300. I had the 1.73 533fsb stock. I got a Dothan 1.6 400mhz cpu and tried to pin mod. I jumped the board on B16 and C16 and when you boot it goes till about 3/4 of the bios loading and it freezes. (this is with the 90w psu) However if I use a 65w psu BIOS finishes but tells me that I am using a 65W psu and that I will have decreased performance. When it boots into windows my speed is at 800mhz. I checked the BIOS while on the 65w psu and it says current clock speed 800mhz, min clock speed 800mhz and maximum clock speed 2.13ghz.

I don't know what else to do now to make it work. Thanks in advanced.

will it work too even if i didnt put thermal compound.because i dont have it.its has heat sink though.

lol you need to put thermal paste.

Sorry to say but looks like the chip can't take it. With the right power supply, the laptop actually sets the highest multiplier (which would now give 2.13) and it freezes (unstable). But if you use the 65W the laptop forces into lowest multiplier and it's stable at the lowest multiplier...

Very much in agreement here. If not the notebook will become an expensive door stop within seconds.

I'm trying to figure out why i'm not able to view the pics of this thread... i keeps telling me I don't have permission to view them. Wonder if I can post...
It is possible that you were trying to view the pics when not logging in?

Nope every time I click on one of the photos (from the first post of this thread) to try to see a blown up view I get get the standard V bulletin error

"thisisstupid, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?

We'll take a look into it right away.

you should be able to look at them now. let us know if you still have a problem.
Tried it again, even tried using a diffrent computer. Is it a problem not unique to me? Can anyone else click and get and enlarged photo? I'm specifically trying to see the picture of the motherboard/chassis
post #1420 of 1473
Looking at the 1st post of the thread I have no issue with clicking on the thumbnails and seeing a larger pic. This is using FF, IE8, Chrome and Safari.

Are you still experiencing the same issue as you stated in your above post? Or did you get a new error message?

Which browser are you using, and its version?

cheers ...
