im confused as to why to do this? Why not just get the 2.13 ghz 533mhz one?

not sure what you're askin' but i'll give it a shot... if you mean why do the pin mod instead of buyin' a faster processor, it's in the answer that is part of my post

there's a premium price for the M770... it cost me $300 extra to get it for my XPS Gen 2... it's not cost effective because it's about a 6% increase in performance but it cost about 10% more... i work in IT so it's not a big deal for me 'cause it's a tax deduction... just a cost of doin' biz...

Quick question... should this also work with the 6000d? I would imagine it is the same chipset, but not sure.
Yes. I have a pin modded 6000 and XPS2.

Great, thanks man

How hard is this mod? Would a complete modding-noob be able to do it by himself/maybe with some friend's help? Or would I be safer off just getting the 1.86 upgrade from dell and spend $70ish more?

While it's safer to get the upgrade, it should be no problem to pinmod for almost anyone. Just read the instructions carefully, take your time and don't forget to breathe I had never done a pinmod before and neither have I ever owned a laptop before, but it went like a charm. The most annoying thing was actually applying the AS5 but only because I spilt some on my 9300 cover

One thing though, remember to cut the wire short enough (but obviously not too short) to minimize the risk of it touching other pins when you insert the cpu.

Hi!

So I have been doing some testing. Pc wizard does not work properly it alwayes show the same temperature 38c.

Then I used rmclock but could not find any temperatures.

So I endet up with a testversion of hardware sensors. And it seems to work ok.

I get a mainboard temp of 37-40c

cpu1 temp at 28c when the pc ist on, but doing nothing, and ends at 54c when working full load with prime 95.

Cpu 2 is constantly at 42c ( I am not sure but I think it is the gpu)

The bios shows 2,13 ghz the funny thing is that windows only does
sometimes even when windows does not show it runs at 2,13ghz.

Any one got any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
Kempf.

On a scale of 1-10 I would rate the pin-mod at about a 6 to 7. It's pretty much just follow directions however you are working with and around some pretty expensive components and although the risk is pretty low a nasty screwdrive slip could really cost you.

Getting that tiny piece of wire prepared and into the socket can be a real challenge too!

Woot, just accomplished 1.5 to a 2.0 in a I6000. every thing seems to be fine and stable, with undervolt at .748 and 1.228. idel temps: 33-36c load: not more than 54-55c with prime.

How much AS5 is needed? Outpost has 3.5g and 12g that you can buy. I'd rather not spend 20 bucks on the 12 if only 3.5 is needed~

3.5 is fine. I have a small syringe that I have used many times.
about the size of half a grain of rice.

exactly R. Lee... lol and i found it hard as hell to judge cause it's such a tiny amt and the syringe is just wantin' me to push that stuff out... but i guess i did ok, cause my temps are down... when you're rubbin' in the AS5 before wipin' it off (you'll understand when you read the instructions lol) it's some damn thick stuff... about the most viscous thing i've ever worked with...

Just to make sure, when applying AS5, you completely scrape off all the black stuff on the cpu and heatsink, then apply as5 to the heatsink, and al over the CPU or just on the part that pops up. Thanks

Yes, get rid of all the old remnants. and apply it just on the part that pops up(the core.)

yep, exactly right...

you also need to use a solvent to totally clean the microscopic valleys... denatured alcohol is excellent... usin' only your finger is not prepin' the surface properly as explained in the FS instructions..

the whole point of the plastic bag step is to fill these microsopic valleys... and the plastic bag is so no skin oil, cells, etc. fill the surface...

also, as stated in the FS instructions, it takes a couple weeks and several heat/cool cycles for FS5 to work at its max...

it's reduced my temps very well... the hardest part is knowin' exactly how much to apply 'cause it's such a small amt - more room for error...

PLEASE read the Artic Silver instructions... they are excellent and very detailed with pics... i read them several times... even called 'em and they were very nice and helpful...

uhm, actually the instructions say nothing about wiping off the AS5.. only the AS1, 2 & 3. atleast that's the way i read it
