Does pin modding work only on the 9300 or the xps2? I'm getting a vaio s270 with the same 400 MHz bus speed. Can I do the same application on it and overclock? Also, is it even advisable to do so since the notebook is so small?

The notebook has to be based on the intel 915M chipset.

OIC, then do the newer s480's have the 915M chipset?

Why0Why you might want to suggest that people purchase some extra screws before doing this mod.

I have built and torn apart several desktops but this was my first laptop work. So I was extra careful when doing it and still managed to strip several screws, most not so bad but 2 or 3 had to be replaced because they couldn't be screwed all the way back in. It was more difficult than I thought to find the screws but found a local supplier. I also found a few suppliers on ebay and I am sure there are websites which sell them.

After getting my replacement screws I realized that it was not my carelessness that led to their demise but rather the fact that altho dell may put nice video cards in these laptops, they definitely skimp on the screws. The blue adhesive they put on the bottoms, kind of lock them in there and definitely doesnt help the situation. The only good thing about them is that they are lighter in weight than other screws but they really could use some deeper heads. I think it might be helpful to some people if you suggested they purchase the screws ahead of time so they can replace just about ALL the ones that are in there while they have it open. I think this would make future repairs much easier and also I prefer to have nicer screws holding my nice parts together. I realize that having different screws in there might be an issue with some people's warranties but beyond that I see no reason not to make the switch.

Ayways, I really appreciate the information you've provided for this mod and now that my machine is 100% back together I am really stoked to have such a fast and relatively cheap pc.

thx

Need some input here. If I take my 1.8 745 out of my 700M and drop it in my xps G2 pinmodded can I take my 2.0 760 and drop it in my 700M? Will it work at a slower speed?

Yeah it will run at 1.5.

BTW I did something similar; taking the 700m apart is not nearly as easy as taking apart a xps2.

I actually ordered a 1.8 700m and already did the swap. I had a 2.0 up to 2.66 pinmodded in my 9300, software downclocked to 2.53, and it was a little too hot for my liking.

I then swapped the 1.8 from the 700m into the 9300@2.4. I have to run damn near the same voltage for it to run anywhere near stable. Read as, a ridiculous amount of voltage. After gaming for two hours, about one of 20 times when i switch back to windows desktop I BSOD, so i'm not even going to claim stability @ 2.4.

My advice would be to be happy with what you have now. But hey, maybe your 1.8 is from a better yield than mine. You can always try it out and swap em back.

(although after you disassemble the 700m once, you won't want to... trust me on this one )

Nana nah nah nah, another 1,7 Dothan at 2,26

And another Dothan, another Dothan, another Dothan 1,7 at 2,26
Hey, gonna out-race-you, another Dothan at 2,26

Look out!

Congrats, glad you got it working. Even with this very poor guide

Hehe, with the Dell docs I was assured that I knew exactly what to take apart.
Without it I would never have believed how much of the damn thing I would have to take apart to get to the cpu, let alone the vid card.

If it wasn't for you... I probably would've forked over several hundreds of Euro's extra for even less power then I have now. I owe you a couple of bears, next time you're in Amsterdam

I'll take you up on that...although it could be a while. Been meaning to get that passport...
Hehe, well since 9-11 the local Gestapo made us carry ID all the time, so a passport might come in handy if you don't want to end up in the brig.
Anyway, the country's full of Heineken, if that'll do the trick then the factory is just a few blocks away

Yes indeed and you get a fine if you can't. They even take yo to the police station I think Wonderfull world we live in eh?

I wonder if wanting to pay less for cpu power would make me less of a capitalistic pig and therefor more likely to be a poor bastard terrorist...
Could promising to play the US marines side more in BF2 on my capatalist pig XPS2 change stuff?

Sorry to hear it did not work out for you.

I am 100% stable with mine running at 2.4 with stock voltages on each multiplier. Played BF2 @ CSS and ran prime for 12 hours with not one issue. I also have my ULTRA overclocked to 500/1200.

My 700M now is running at 1.5 but that is more than enough for its role.
