cornholio: That is great! I bet your system is smoking!

I have a warranty question about this if anyone can help. I understand that it will void warranty to change the cpu. However, what would happen if there was a problem and you put the old cpu back in? Do you think they could really tell it wasn't there? I realize they don't use AS5, but you could always put the old thermal tape back on (obviously not the piece you scraped off
post #304 of 1457
There is no thermal tape on the cpu, but this little aluminium film.
Once that comes off it'll never stick back the way they can't tell it's been scraped off before.
I just modded the lappie and will see what happens, too bad about warranty if they make a problem of that.

I finally put AS5 on my processor and gpu. My old idle temps were 45cpu and 54gpu and when I used to run 3dmark05 my processor temps would hit 54, and my gpu would get up to the point where it would throttle it back(95+). With the AS5 my cpu idles at 33 and gpu idles at 50, and during a 3dmark05 run the cpu peaks at 49 and the GPU peaks at about 60.

If you are even considering doing this to your laptop stop reading this and do it, you'll be happy with the results.

Oh, and it only took me about 20 minutes from first screw removed to back together and running.

3DMark05 sucks as far as stress testing.
My rig ran 525/1300 for hours doing that and all was just fine.

Then I ran the HDR demo (rthdribl_1_2.zip) for a while... man.. temps jumped up another 10 degrees from 71 to 81!! (celsius). And finally at 81 degrees the system froze

Now it's 'downclocked' to 512.1300 at it can run the HDR demo at 81 degrees for two hours...

BTW.

One question. Do 400MHz versions of Dothan have executive disable bit?

I know that 533MHz versions have it but, does I9300 even support it?

**Edit**

Just looked it up on the intel website and it seems like 7*5 do not have that feature.Clicky

So, do you guys think this really makes any difference?

I know nobody will give up their newfound computing power over this, but i was just wondering what kind of an effect this might have, in case this feature is needed and not present.
Well, it's a worm/trojan protection and as long as you have safe computing (firewall and virusscanner) it shouldn't even come close to being a risk.
And indeed, I'd rather give up that single bit than losing my extra power.

All in All I saved over 500 bucks this way, would you pay 500 bucks for that bit?

No answers? (and btw, the aluminum tape is basically thermal tape. You can purchase the aluminum stuff online. The exact brand is listed somewhere, but any aluminum tape should work, since if they remove the heatsink, they should all look torn apart

My feeling as I see it - the new proc. should not affect anything on the comp, so if there is a failure, putting the old proc. back with new tape should not be noticed, and arguably, should not affect the warranty if it didn't cause the problem. If the new proc fails, well, that's not a dell issue anyway... Comments anyone??

I feel the same. I still have the original processor myself.

Will this mod work on my I8600 1.6?
No.
OK guys, this is my first post here. I bought the 9300 inspiron with the 1.6 533mhz and then i bought my fiance the 6000 with the 1.6 400mhz. I put my 1.6 533mhz in her laptop and it works fine. I pin modded the 9300 and put her 1.6 400mhz and it still shows 1.6. I even took it all apart and replaced the jumper thinking it had not made proper contact with the proc pins. Any ideas?

Make 100% sure you're GF's cpu is really a 400MHz fsb model.
Also make really sure that you modded the 9300 correctly.
It is easier to make mistakes than you might think it is.

Also, the system still knows it's a 1.6GHz cpu, but if you run for example Sandra or Everest you will see that it recognizes it as a 1.6GHz cpu with a 33% overclock.

you were right on the money. Dell put a 533 in hers instead of the 400. I had to rip them both open again and check. So now do I call Dell and complain or how would I go about this. I mean it is a faster chip then what I purchased if it were not going to be pin modded. Would I also have to send the laptop back? They would clearly see the proc had been removed and AS5 had been applied.
I would just buy a seperate cpu, 1.6 or 1.7, and sell the other one.

I would just purchase a 400 on eBay and sell the other 533. You should make a couple of bucks or come out even at the worst.
Would this be my best bet? Also is that a reasonable price for it? http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Centrino-P...QQcmdZViewItem
post #319 of 1457
Little high priced, but yes. If you plan on spending $200 - you can get one from zipzoomfly for $219 shipped.
what if i were to get this since i have to buy a new proc. Intel Pentium M 765 2.1 GHz, 400MHz FSB. If thats is to fast what would be the optimum freq to get and do the pin modd to.
