A Photo Guide for Pin Modding 9300/XPS and Applying AS5 to GPU - Page 20

RAM: I think any of the 1GB sticks are fine, I am using Transcend.

CPU: I think eBay is still the best choice. A 1.6 runs at 2.13, you don't select the speed.

Paste: Most people recommend Arctic Silver but any high quality paste will do.

I just got a z70va today and the 1.7 dothan. I have tried over and over and it keeps on booting and saying I have a 1700mhz processor? I have tried wired from an old power supply and a copper wire out of a monster cable. Both are very thin. I have also tried linking the 16b/16c and the 15c/16c. Both with the same results. Should the wire be so long that it is making contact with the bottom of the socket or should it be short just to cross the pins?

Any help would be very appreciated!

Danke. I'm also interested in why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I'd like to try it out, but if it's going to void my warranty and all that, I think I'll wait till x-mas if it's going to fudge things up.

PS- Any quick links to what the differences in performance are?

If it's not going to make much difference on games (I've been told the 6800go is more ram-limited than CPU limited in the 9300), I'd prefer to leave it alone for awhile. But if this 1.73 is going to bug me, it'd be better to know now so i can start shopping for the other chip. Thing is, I'd like to give my lappy time to exhibit any "personality traits" I might need covered under warranty before I do some major surgery on her.

Bitte. The differences are pretty linear. I was surprised to see very little improvement in FPS. Most of the games are GPU limited. It is better for CPU intensive tasks like encoding.

The reason it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't is this: CPU manufacturers test CPUs, the ones that spec highest get a higher rating. So it is kind of luck of the draw what your silicon supports. Intel has also been known to actually stamp higher spec chips as a lower speed if they run short in production.

Then it'll become a test project for me some week when I'm bored and can afford to mess it up.

I'll still probably buy a chip in the next week or so, just so it'll be there when I need/want to go for it.

Since I mainly play COH and will play Half Life 2 and the upcoming COV, none of which are uber graphics intensive anymore, I should be good.

Hmmm...what tasks include encoding? Will it affect download speeds, transfer or large pieces of data (IE, a music collection?)? I'm assuming it'll slow down my conversion of some of my mp3s to itunes format, but that's a one-shot deal so no biggie there.

LOL, Bitte is german for "Please".
post #389 of 1457
Ah. *smacks head* He probably thought i was german from the "danke" comment earlier...I just get bored with "thank you" and like to switch it up from time to time. I throw out a "gratzi" now and then too...lol, I do it in real life, didn't realize it might not transfer that well to online conversations.

Question about the AS tutorial link in original post. I saw that it is for large area CPU's. There is another one for small area CPU's. Shouldnt that one be used because the Pentium M is small? If not, just let me know cuz I dont want to mess up.
post #391 of 1457
Actually, my bad. Bitte could also mean "You're welcome". Oops, hehe.
post #392 of 1457
AS5 is what i and most other people used... i talked to a tech/officer at the company and told him what i was doing and he said this was the right one...

btw, the guy was really nice and informative and gave me a surprising amout of his time...

the only hard part is getting such a small amount for the PM... small grain of rice...

also, he said to do the coffee filter/rubbing in thing too...
post #393 of 1457
So I should use the originial tutorial that was posted, for the larger ones. Correct?

Converting MP3 to itunes is somewhere you would notice the speed increase. Or decrypting DVD's to the hard drive.

The application of AS5 is always the same for me. I start in the corner with a bead, then spread it out with a folded piece of small paper. The AS5 comes in a syringe any time I have seen it. With the way the surface of my heatsink was, especially the GPU, I HIGHLY recommend rubbing it in.

Yes, bitte was meant as you're welcome

exactly, nothing to do with the internet will be any faster because the limiting factor there is your connection... your network is far faster and your computer is far faster still by many, many magnitudes... you'll only notice it on really CPU intensive tasks...

btw, the coffee filter/rubbing in/rubbing off thing is to fill any microscopic voids like it says in the instructions - it doesn't take the place of the actual application...

Did the pin mod and its working great. I had a really hard time getting the damn wire into the socket. I used an old dsl modem power cable and pulled a copper strand out of it. After about 10 minutes of trying I finally got it in there and seated properly. Anybody wanna buy a 1.73 processor ?
post #397 of 1457
Only 10 minutes? LMAO. It took me forever trying to get the damn thing in. My hands shake so bad you'd think I'm a crack addict. First I made it to big, than I made another one which was still to big, and kept going on from there. In order to keep track of the one that worked, I had to get some scotch tape and stick it on that and fold the tape over it cuz it was so damn small and I didnt want to lose it.

It actually didn't take me long. I made it too big the first time, I cut it down and used needle nosed pliers to insert it. That's why I put a pic of the wire next to other things, because it is difficult to appreciate how small it needs to be.
post #399 of 1457
Quick question. I'm thinking of doing this pin-mod once I get my laptop. Has anyone been succesful doing it with a 1.7GHZ P-M? I'm estimating it would boot at 2261MHz, a 561MHz increase. Would that be possible or would I need to increase the voltage?

Some people have had luck with even 1.8s, but the general consensus is:
1.6 = 99% chance it will work
1.7 = 85% chance
1.8 = 50% chance

That is without volt mods. I tried a 1.7, and couldn't get into windows So got a 1.6 and worked perfectly
