A Photo Guide for Pin Modding 9300/XPS and Applying AS5 to GPU - Page 46

does it have to be arctic silver? the only place i can get some w/o paying shipping is at best buy, they sell Dynex Silver Thermal Compound:

"Be kind to your CPU and keep it cool with the added protection of silver-based thermal compound.

5 grams (approx. 0.2 oz.) gray thermal compound in a syringe; spreader card included
Extended temperature limits 0°C to 200°C
9.2428 W/m.C thermal conductivity"

with this work?

Never heard of it, but I'd say it'll be better than reusing the thermal pad.
Yeah, that's fine...ffs, I don't even know how Arctic Silver built such a rep, other than mod sites started using it...you're not going to notice a difference in terms of crashing or being able to run yer CPU at higher voltages just because you use a different thermal paste...anything's better than the old pad, though, as I hit 91C max load with it on there...splattered some AS5 on the chip, and now it doesn't get above ~64 or so, even after hours of playing WOW w/1.8@2.4 and 1.420v...if it burns out the chip after a year, I don't really care as a year from now I'll just buy another chip for $3 or whatever they're selling for then!

PS. Off-topic: Just watched the movie SAW2...it was actually even better than the first one, which was surprising for a schlock horror flick...good for renting or PPV if you've never seen it!

I am buying a 9300 that currently has a 1.6 GHz 533Mhz FSB. I have read most of the messages in this thread and have gleaned the following information. Please confirm or deny that:

For a successful pinmod I need to purchase an SL7EG (manufacturer part #), 1,6 Ghz Pentium M 1.6 Ghz/2MB cache?

I find searching by Man Part # to be easiest for me. Thank you ...

you can use most any Pentium-M 400MHz CPU. 1.6 works almost always and is your best bet. Many have installed 1.7 as well as the 1.8 which pinmods to 2.4GHz. I just did this yesterday (1.8 to 2.4) and its running fine! The 1.8 spec number is SL7EN. eBay goes for about 140.00 shipped.

Bah, i threw in some cooling gel stuff and it only lowered it a few degrees. Now at 31-33 degrees. Any other suggestions?

Is that with the fan on? Also, give the thermal compound some time to cure/settle. You *may* see a slight improvement (1-2C) over the next week or 2. How did you apply it? There's a bit of skill involved in a careful, proper application. If you put in too much/too little, don't have clean surfaces, get air pockets, etc, it will affect performance.

yeah thats with the fan on. I think i put too much on, so i went back and redid the application more carefully. That might have been part of the problem. i took of the heat sync and the compound was in great big oozing globs all around it. I cleaned it up and put and a thin, clean sheet of it. we shall see how it works.

yeah its still staying around 33 degrees. how long do you think my proc will last? i may just end up undoing the mod

it's made to run 3 times that hot... you should have no probs... my M770/2.13GHz is at 27 right now but i'm running RMClock 2.0 to reduce voltage to the CPU and I9KFanGUI to control my fans... enjoy
post #913 of 1457
btw, here's a good thread for undervolting

I thought you said you undid the pin mod, and it didn't make any difference? That idle temp is fine, BTW. A bit higher than some, but your ambient temp also plays a factor. More importantly, what is the load temp? Run Prime95 or a similar CPU stress app, and see how high it goes. That will tell the real story of your cooling.
yes, i did take out the pin mod, it made very little difference.
AHA!! My fan speed was running on slow. I cranked it up and w00t, big difference. Thanks for all the help guys

I am curious ... what are people paying these days for their chips? I am looking for a 1.6 Ghz Dothan (725).
So, this is my first time posting and i'm a complete newb when it comes to modding and I was wondering if I could use this guide to mod my Toshiba L25 S1192?

It has an Intel 1.5 Ghz Celeron M 370, Dothan 400 Mhz FSB ,1 GB L2 Cache, 90nm. If I can mod this processor would I just follow the guides on this thread and what should I expect to OC at and still be stable?

Also is there anyway to OC the ATI RADEON M200 XPRESS integrated chip for better performance?

Thank you all for the help
I haven't heard of anyone pinmodding a Celeron. Is the socket layout even the same? Maybe you could, but I'm guessing no. If it's been done successfully, perhaps someone will chime in and give you a range you could expect to achieve, but typically OC'ing is very individualized, so no one will be able to tell you what you could "expect to OC at and still be stable". This mod is basically a one adjustment OC: changing the FSB from 400 to 533, so it's not like OC'ing a desktop where you can make incremental changes. It either works, or it doesn't (or you have to voltmod, which is probably a bit out of your league at this point).

And as far as OC'ing the chipset goes, is that graphics? Or just north/southbridge? Even if it's possible, OC'ing integrated graphics is pointless, IMHO, and I've never found much benefit from OC'ing motherboard chipsets, if that's what it is.

After reading everyone's idle temperatures for their cpu i'm looking at mine and it just seems soo high. Idle my cpu runs at 45 degrees celcius using I9k fangui

n/m I undervolted it now and it runs sooooo much cooler now. Damn stock voltages are 1.356V.
