Targus TXL617 XL Backpack Review

Hey all... just received my Targus backpack from Buy.com. It's the Targus TXL617. I purchased it for my 9300 because my saddle bag isn't big enough to hold anything but the 9300.

This thing is pretty big! It must be to hold the 9300 plus other stuff, though. It is made from 840D Nylon & 420D Nylon Ripstop. The notebook compartment measures 16.5" x 2.2" x 12.9".

It can hold a cd/mp3 player or ipod, and has a headphone "port". Just below the padded cd player pocket is a padded sunglasses pocket with velcro strap. It also has another padded sunglasses pocket on the side with a nice soft fabric on the inside (see below)

The straps are pretty comfortable and there is a bonus removable cell phone holder on the strap.

The notebook compartment is very large and plenty big enough to fit my 9300, as you can see below. It is decently padded, although I think a little more padding couldn't hurt. There is a velcro strap, of course, to hold the notebook in.

Here is a picture of me wearing the bag with the 9300 in it. I'm 6' 0" and 200 pounds and it doesn't seem too big for me... I'm sure that it would dwarf some people, but I needed a bag that can hold all of my accessories and still have room for more.

Also, I was dissappointed to find out that one of the zippers (the small horiz. pocket on the front at the bottom) didn't work very well and is pretty difficult to work. That's ok, there are tons of other compartments and pockets!

BTW, I got it from Buy.com for $56.47 and free shipping!

I have one too...and love it. It's a big one, though.
Love that it has tons of rooms!
Good price. I think they are selling at Best Buy for $90

So which way is the best way to place the 9300/XPS2 in a backpack arrangement (on it's side). Should the DVD combo drive go down or hard drive side?

Just received my Targus XL backpack. It easily consumes the Dell 9300. It would hold a 17" even larger. It has ample room for accessories, power bricks, extra drives, etc. The real test, though, was holding a second notebook!

Using some molded foam courtesy of Dell, I fashioned a cradle in the second largest compartment and slipped my 8600 right in. A few more pieces of foam for extra measure...presto, a two-unit, notebook backpack, still with enough room for both ac bricks, cables, a floppy drive, headphones, etc.

Why 2 notebooks? BECAUSE I CAN! Ha, ha, ha!!

Thanks for the review - I just got my 9300 Wednesday and discovered that it wouldn't fit in any of my 4 backpacks.
With the 9300 inside the Targus, is there still room for notebooks and perhaps a thick (~3") textbook?

With 2 laptops (see sig) I can still get a textbook and legal pad in it, plus all the computer gear.

I paid $96 including tax.

And I don't regret it a bit. At the time I needed a Targus XL and couldn't even afford to wait even 24hrs. Best Buy was there...They had...I bought it.
Great quality, perfect size...... Props to all of you who set fourth the effort and were able to get it cheaper.

How big is the one that dell sells for it?
i have pics of dell's mobile edge (DME) bag (the $50 one, not the regular dell $40 one)as soon as I can get them uploaded (hopefully this evening). i have compared both dell's bag and the targus XL. if you look at dimensions of both, you'll find the targus bag is taller by about 4" and wider by about 3". The depths are the same, however targus uses the depth more for books while DME uses it more for the pocket on the front (i put my power cord in it). you can fit a book or 2 into DME bag with the notebook inside. my only complaint is that the notebook compartment on the DME bag is not tall enough to pad the entire 9300. however, there is more padding on the bag itself to compensate. the 9300 fits all the way into the targus bag, but like it was said above, the bag itself provides no padding. another strange thing is DME bag has a flap that comes down and covers the headphone port...not sure why they did that. these 2 bags share a lot of the same features, the only differences being dimensions as described, the notebook compartment height as described, the DME bag has one less "book" compartment--so instead of 3 like targus, it has 2 but the total size IMO is still the same. also, the DME bag has more padding on the part of the bag that touches your back.

PS: the targus bag is 39.99 if you buy online at compusa ($69.99 - $10 instant savings - $20 mail MFR rebate).

It looks huge on me, but I'm only 5'5"
Everyone asks me if I'm going camping.

Great review, nice pics. I'm 6'3" so this bag should work nicely for me =)
