I am forced to order an Inspiron for my work. I've been shopping around for about a month and haven't been able to get the inspiron 8600 that I wanted for less than 3000$. Today I jump on dell's higher education site and come up with the exact laptop I want for 2932.00$. The more or less exact same laptop (including warranties) is 3400 in big business and 3500 in small business, and 3300 in healthcare. What am I missing here? This is without any coupons or anything. yeah, i was going to buy from crucial, but I have 3100 to burn. Also, I am not sure about what it does to your warranty. Do you know if it affects your warranty?
Thanks,
Derek

yeah i would get a Sager, but like I said I am forced to buy a dell for my lab. We need above average computing power, for handling extremely large photoshop and tiff files (~500-700mb), basic data crunching, and good battery life (>2hrs for presentations, travel, etc...) I tried to get my boss to wait for the 3750, but he wants a Dell. Really for what we do a Sager is an inappropriate allocation of power. I do love my 4760, though--bought it with grant money.

Are you talking about 3100 US funds? That seems extremely high for the setup you have.

I opened a mail box in the US today to ship my 8600 to, and will be placing the order tommorow as soon as the address is added to my credit card.

My setup is this; 1.6ghz, WSXGA+, 512 2 dimm, 128 nvidia, 60gig 7200, 4x dvd+r, bluetooth, wireless a/b/g, free wireless router, 1 year warranty (went cheap here, hope it doesnt burn me), extra full battery, no floppy, no case, no extras

final price was $2333, minus $75 from coupons. Not sure if shipping is free, but going to try a phone order and talk them into this.

All in all, say $2350 shipped, US funds. Canadian is a shade over $3000, and with the mailbox there's no GST/PST. I think you should re-think your order..... and buy your ram somewhere else.

Wdi you order online or on the phone? If you ordered online, what department did you order it from, Business, Education, or Home?

1. 2932 US FUNDS
2. Not my FUNDS
3. I've been configuring prices for this computer for 1.5 months and haven't seen anything under 3000 before coupons
4. Buying for a hospital/university so I can't use coupons
5. The 600$ difference includes: double the ram, higher screen res, 2 year warranty difference, 3 year accidental damage protection, and other things like a case, floppy, 128 mem key, speakers, etc... all things I have been required to buy.

your really wasting your money on a dell.

Ill sell you mine for 2500.00 two years left on the full warranty and allows 2 hard drives at once or 2 batteries and you still get the fixed optical

I think you need to work on your sales pitch.

Mine was priced via the "Home" option at Dell.com.

Question to the original poster, why does buying for a hospital/university prevent you from using an online coupon? Coupons are entered at the time of purchase right at the checkout, and deducted immediately..

I have yet to see a coupon for the Healthcare or University sections. They may exist, I just can't find them.

I have to submit an order to a purchaser, who doesn't use the online site, rather they have some nebulous process which takes weeks and is primarily done through phone and fax. At least, this is how it has been done in the past.

3000 bucks for those specs?? oh boy... it doesn't matter whose funds are they. That price tag is outragerous indeed. So high it almost hurts.

Cheers.

but what I'm really paying for is Dell's great name and great Customer Care....right....right guys?
seriously, if anyone can find me a better price ON A DELL for those exact specs please let me know. I'd appreciate it. Even with buying a 512 from Crucial (143 bucks) the dell is still really expensive. I wish you could buy them with no RAM at all.
Wow.. not once in my life could i ever imagine seeing the words "Great" and "Dell Customer Care" in the same sentance.

Honestly, i feel really bad for people who have to use Dell's customer support. Its crap, and is out-sourced to Inda. The people know nothing, and never actually help..

Honestly, as we have shown you before, you are getting ripped off, bad. Configure a HOME system, and submit that to your department for purchase....

Yes, I've configured the 8600 many times in the Home, healthcare, Education, Business etc.. I've never been able to get it below 3000 for THESE specs. I would really appreciate it if you could show me a cheaper config. I'm in no hurry to buy this thing, I've already been combing the dell site for over a month.

Check out the forums on techbargains and fatwallet - they often have 5/10% coupons that might help you out. Of course I can't really recomemnt a DELL. my 5000e was the last of the good dells
post #18 of 27
for 3000.00 they are sticking the stick up your ass , the only thing decent about dell is complete care but if its at work in the same spot, only way it will get damaged is user error.

get a sager save yourself alot of money

For me, nothing came close to beating the Dell price in equivalent features. 4x DVD+r, Centrino, 128 meg video, spare battery, widescreen, a/b/g networking, and a 7200 rpm HD ..... for just a shade over $2000.

($2247 exactly, shipped)
