T21 display configuration

Thread Starter
I have a display problem with my T21. It was working OK when I turned it off but the next time it started there was a black band along the top and down the left side and the windows taskbar had disappeared off the bottom somewhere. I found that by changing the resolution to 1400x1050 the black bands disappeared but the taskbar was still off the bottom somewhere.
After trawling through all the various setting windows I have come to the conclusion that the LCD has reconfigured itself to 1400x1050 and with the resolution set to 1024x768 then the black bands were part of the border around the desktop which was set up in the centre of the display.
The problem is that my display IS 1024x768 according to the model number but I can find no way of changing the 1400x1050 which shows up under the LCD resolution in the monitor properties window. I have played about with the dual monitor settings and I have looked in the bios and tried removing and re-installing the graphics driver but with no joy. In fact, when I tried re-installing the Savage driver the installation failed saying that the AGP device couldn't be found. Despite the re-installation failing, the display properties shows that a savage drive IS installed. I wonder where it came from.
I am becoming desparate enough to format the drive and install Windows 98SE instead of XP Pro which I am using at the moment but I have a feeling that this wouldn't solve the problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes!! Another soul who understands what I have been dealing with! I have a T20 that was given to me a week ago (unused since new, as it turns out - because no non-techie could figure this out).

It is not the OS, went through 3 of them! I flashed the BIOS with the latest from IBM (nothing all that new). My workaround of sorts is to watch where the IBM logo appears on startup - if it's not centered there, I hit CTRL-ALT-Delete until it does (sometimes up to about 10 attempts). I have had better luck with proper screen alignment when I am working on battery power only - but read on for more excitement...

If you have found the answer to this somewhere, would you please post it here?

I am also getting a lot of System Halted screens (with no ID codes to troubleshoot), related to some 'hardware failure'. It appears that when I have the machine plugged into the charger, these BSOD come up - and not when operating on battery. Also, when it does charge, it overcharges - so that I have to unplug, remove battery and hold the power button to drain the capacitor. Also... the battery life pictured in the systray goes up to nearly two hours, but in reality that time clicks by much faster - I get about 40 minutes before I have to save, shut down and... overcharge <sigh>. Needless to say, this is no production environment machine!

If these issues are related, is it in the charger or the mobo - and would that be worth fixing??

How's that for a challenge!

I have a T20 as well, with the off center display(black bands on left and top). I too have tried every adjustment I could think of, with no luck. There's got to be someone out there, that's run across this problem before.
