Pics Request for the new Qosmio G20-GS2

Hello guys,

Wondered if a new owner of the Toshiba Qosmio G20-GS2 could take some pics. Include screenshots (with various apps loaded, games, video...etc.). Some from a distance and some close.

I was at the local Future Shop (equivalent to a Best Buy) and noticed they had the new G20. Love the "piano gloss" like finish of the keyboard area. Screen was beautiful. Had the right amount of brightness and clarity. Something I was surprised to see lacking in a Sony VAIO. Heard so much rave reviews about their Truebrite screens. Not sure what was the story.

The Qosmio series probably has one of the best looking screens I've seen to date.

Did the goofs set it up wrong? It almost looked dim. I don't know what it was. Will go to a Best Buy and see if they don't have some Sony VAIO laptops on display. Though, being that almost all Sony VAIO's only come with 64MB video RAM it's highly unlikely I'd consider one.

Right now it's between the Toshiba Qosmio and the Dell Inspiron 9300/XPS. I'm leaning more towards the Dells being as I can get a 10% off corporate discount. And that I can customize it to my hearts content. Pretty much. Whereas if i were to go with a Sony I would have to take it "as is" (up here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Actually that would be the case with a Qosmio too. But I'd be willing to overlook that fact since I am happy with the featured hardware/software for the most part. But still the Dells get the top spots all things considered.

Later.

Personally, I'm a tecra fan so I'm not going to suggest anything in favor of or agianst the Quosimo (especially since I've never acually seen one and haven't given them much attention) or the others. Although if you are concerned about the screens, I remember seeing some posts in the Dell section on the forums about problems with these inspirons (I don't rememebr if it was the 9300 or the XPS or both) having alot of light leakage and sparkles, but you'd have to dig around in there to find the stuff. As for the Sony, that's strange that their screen looked so bad. I've heard so many good things about their screens and many consider them to be the best out there.

That being said, if you decide you like the Dell best, you can find even better deals than your %10 using the coupons that are available in these forums (just do a search). They come out every thursday and are usually 20-30% off select inspiron models. Every so often there's a $750 off cupon or even more than %30 (40 or 50 i've heard). The only catch is you have to register yourself with them as a small buisness (which is absolutely no big deal) in order to use the coupons.

good luck

Hello g00nter,

Well said!! Thanks for your words! I appreciate the fact that you didn't immediately make a snap or uninformed comment. Which does happen a lot in some forums.

Yes, I have read many of the Dell 9300 and XPS threads about their screens. Regarding the light leakage issue that is mixed. Some say they do see it along the bottom edge. Another owner said it "went away after a few weeks"...which I find strange...how does a light leakage problem magically "go away"?? Heh... Would this bother me? Perhaps. I know of the few Qosmio screens I've seen there was never any instance of "light leakage".

About the "sparkles"...my buddy has a 600m...did notice it on his screen initially. But after a minute or two of staring at the screen (he had some app and then MS IE on it) I forgot about it.

Haven't seen a Inspiron 9300 or XPS with the TrueBrite 17" screen yet. So, I really can't comment on whether the sparkles is that obvious or less obvious. And, on the Dell forums on this website, the opinions are also mixed. Some people are very bothered. Others claim they don't notice it and that some people are "blowing it out of proportion". (shrug)

While the quality of the screen shouldn't be THE deciding factor it IS a big deal for me. As I would be starring at it a few hours every day. Would be terrible to spend your hard earned money on a new laptop only to be disappointed at the quality of the screen.

The only thing that bothers me about the Qosmio is that there is no option for a better graphics card. Would be great if we could order one with a 256MB nVidia 6800 Ultra or the upcoming Ati Radeon X800XT-mobile. Just "in case" I decide to get into PC gaming again or do some heavy video editing. This isn't a big deal...just a small gripe.

I'll most likely be buying a new desktop PC at the end of 2006 when Longhorn debuts. Or early 2007. For now, I can use my Dell Dimension 8400 desktop should I get big by the gaming bug again or do any video editing. All I would need to do is upgrade the video card from it's Ati Radeon 300SE. And use the laptop for everything else.

WOW! Never knew we could get that much discount using coupons for Dell computers. Wonder if you can use coupons plus a corporate discount. I haven't "discounted" Dell's as one of my other choices just yet. Even if there is a slight chance I might get one with light leakage or sparkle problems.

Thanks for the heads-up about the huge discounts that can be found on this forum!! Sorry for rambling on so long...got carried away...hehe!!

No problem. I felt that the best way for someone to contemplate my advice or comments is to know where I'm coming from.

As far as the dell screens, I've also seen mixed comments, but it's still something to think about. I agree with you that it shouldn't be the deciding factor, however, if I know that a certian model I'm looking at has problems with the screen, I'll shy away from it and look at others.

From what I've been reading, it seems that the latest consensus is that the situation is pretty much resolved. I think it had something to do with a certain manufacturer of the LCD's and when they (dell) recently switched to a different one, the screens seem to have had less problems.

Also from what I've read, the only lappy out there with a 256mb gpu is one of those insipirons. But I'd expect alienware and saeger to jump on the boat soon too, if they haven't already. I'm not a gamer nor do I do any 3d graphics work or video editing, so the gpu has never been a priority for me.

As for the Dell discounts, they are pretty amazing, and I doubt they'd let you combine it with a different one, but who knows, it might be worth a shot. That's the one thing keeping me tuned into the Dells as a possibility for my next lappy, but so far I'm still liking the tecras more. It makes you actually wonder how much these lappys should actually cost and what their profit margin is.

I agree. I mean, I've read about guys ordering their Dell's with $750 coupons. One guy got an alleged $1250 discount. Sheeeeshhh!! Unreal.

It is interesting to know that Dell is having "less problems" with their screens. But the consensus is still very mixed. At least on this forum. I e-mailed Dell yesterday asking how they would handle things should a customer receive a laptop with "light leakage". Will hear from them this week (it's 1:43 am EST).

Still, the best looking screens I've seen so far have been from the Qosmio's. No sparkles or light leakage. And I'd be buying from a FutureShop or BestBuy. Good thing about that is should I have any issues with my laptop at all I can get a quick exchange or refund (within a certain period of time...14 days...iirc). No questions asked. Well maybe one heh...

Enjoy your Sunday!

most places here you can find one for $3400.00cdn if you look around. as for the design it is super hot.

dell is now saying that a certain amount of light leakage, and the screen sparkles are "normal" on a laptop and that they are not taking action unless it is an exceptional case. sager and alienware have 256mb gpu's if you really are thinking you need that kind of power. the alienware 7700 and the sager 9880 both come with gpu's in that category.

you can get alot off with dell but the sparkles are something you really have to see in person. the 600m is a different case...look at the dell before you buy it.

Will this (Qosmio) be released in the US? Can't see why not... I sure would love one! I think it has plenty of horse power for me.
