Adaware and other spyware/malware hunting programs can generate false positives and frequently regard benign cookies as threats.

I guess that could be it, but it was a data miner , i dont know, maybe it is a falseposisitive, but still, to see that, kinda ticked me off a little
post #4 of 20
what is it detecting? because most likely it is a hardware info collector for the HP support apps
post #5 of 20
I am planning on buying a HP laptop in approx 1 to 2 weeks. I will try the same thing and see what happens. Will let you know
post #6 of 20
More info of the data miner(adaware lists them) will help in checking out whether it was real spyware/adware or something used by HP support software.

Alexa is not a spyware installed by HP but by MS...It is present in Windows XP...Its an extension of IE called "Related Links" under tools menu. When you click on that it will search through Alexa and find sites related to the one you are viewing...

At work, we have been dealing with a "Quickbooks" install that comes with a desktop that we use. We unistalled "Quickbooks", but everytime a new user logs in, you are prompted to insert the install disk for "Quickbooks". This has not made us very happy and we are sending a nasty little message to HP about this. Looking at the registry, it looks just like adware and it is from an HP image.

Alexa is NOT installed by Microsoft. You have obviously been trojaned by an adware web page because I do not have that here in my fresh installation of XP.

ALexa is ADWARE....and there is a reason it doesn't exist in SP2.

I think the guy had an older version of the OS. At one point, Alexa was bundled as part of IE. But he should upgrade to the latest IE anyway. Don't worry.

he should upgrade to SP2 and get rid of that junk.

Do a google search on Alexa!!!

It was present in all Windows XP versions pre SP2. MS removed it in SP2. The OP obviously has a pre SP2 disc. So, it re-appeared again.

It does no harm if you leave it alone. Unless you have installed other Alexa software.
pretty soon microsoft wont reactivate pre-SP2 discs so the OP better make a slipstream copy quick.

yeha, im going to have do that soon. actually, i think im going to just download the newest updates, and burn a disk image to use at a later date. and yes, it was a pre sp2 disk.

I've heard that sp2 can "break" some programs. as anyone had this problem, or is it pretty isolated.

thanks fdor the info so far guys.
SP2 only breaks programs that were crappy to begin with. programs that were written to behave well dont break. I've not had any apps break.

I wanted to give an ipdate on my original post. We discovered that the problem with "Quickbooks" was not with HP, but with the installer/uninstaller for "Quickbooks" by Intuit, the maker of "Quickbooks". We are still looking into the matter from our end as a reseller and I will update if I fond anything else.
