So close to buying it...

Hello everyone, new member here. I was SO CLOSE to buying a new 9300 today it was ridiculous.

But then I was pointed here and came across what I will affectionately call the "lcd display HELL" that seems to happen to almost every user of the 9300's as of late. So I have to ask you guys: is it really as frequent as it seems to be? How many people here actually like their displays? How many of you would acutally recommend buying a 9300 over a 6000 (which is my other choice at the moment)? And how good is dell about replacing the laptop if sparkle, et al does end up bugging me as badly as it has some of you?

I just need to get filled in on if this 9300 is actually a good buy or not.

The LCD is fine. Some people on this board have unecessarily scared people into thinking perfectly normal characteristics of these LCDs are design defects. It's an LCD!!! It's not a CRT.

That said, I ordered mine despite the yacking and complaining...and it's simply gorgeous. The only flaw is that it can't run Mac OSX

Ok, 2 for "do it anyway", what about wuxga vs wxga+?

I agree. Though some people may have had problems with the LCDs, I received mine a week ago and have to say that the beautiful screen is perhaps the best part of the 9300!

These "problems" have been blown out of proportion by: perfectionists and the few people who have actually had defective laptops.

I just ordered a 9300 with the GeForce 6800 video

I didn't get the UXGA LCD though - I think the XGA+ is good enough for me

Another thing to consider is the native resolution of the TrueLife display...

It looks it's best at 1920x1200...anything else and it looks like crap...

Because of this...the text is extremely small, and while there are a few things you can do with the display setting in windows, web pages load very small text.

If you have no need for two side by side docs or web pages...I'd suggest saving the 125 bucks and getting the better video card or the 7200RPM HD.

I have had my 9300 almost a week I got the True Life Samsung screen when I arrived I was amazed how great it looked! Some people are just to picky nothing it perfect.

I have and iXPS 2, it comes with the same screen as the i9300. I have the infamous LG oh no~!!~! I love this screen sooo much. Get the 9300.

Okay some of the screen stuff is overkill. There are a few people that truly do not like their screen, and others who didn't think there was anything wrong until they started reading NBF. Then there are those playing the "Dell Game", call customer service and report a problem and hope for an after purchase discount. Some guys got up to $150 for being "convinced" to keep their I9300's. I suggest you get the 9300 and see how you like it, you have the 21 day return policy.
The 6000 doesn't compare to the 9300 on a lot of levels, but it depends on what you want to do with your lappy. Overall mobility, smaller size, better battery life then get the 6000. If you want to do some gaming, video/photo editing and need a DTR then get the 9300. If you are an uber-gamer who wants the absolute best, then get the XPS2.
On the question of screen choices, once again it depends on what you like. The WUXGA has better resolution and a cleaner look due to the glossy display and tru life. I chose the WXGA because I didn't like the glossy displays when outdoors and I didn't need the higher res. If WSXGA was available I probably would have gone that route, but I am happy with my current screen.
Good luck on you purchase...my vote is get the 9300 and if you don't like it send it back, no worries.

All right, so going with the cheaper screen (wxga+) isn't going to make the laptop look like crap? I maximize EVERYTHING on my 21" screen and never do side-by-side stuff, so the smaller of the two resolutions should work fine?

And about the processors: is 100 bucks for like 130mhz really worth it? I am sitting with the 1.76(?)ghz processor right now, and am debating whether to upgrade it one more step or not. Hmm.
No the cheaper screen still will look good...just not so pristine as the truelife...you will still enjoy it...

I went with the 1.73 P-M...it's been fine...I'd go with the superior video card or the 7200RPM HD...huge performance value in those two items.

The extra speed in the processor won't really make a difference unless you're editing video and encoding stuff...

Just get the 1.6 and buy another proc on ebay and pin mod it. For the $100 give or take some you can have over a 2GHz processor

Does "True life" means glossy? Or is it just "higher resolution"?
Get the TrueLife you will love it unless you are one of the most anal persons on planet earth... No joke I have no idea why people complain about sparkle's... It does not bother me one bit along with most people. The complaints people stand out more then the people who simply love it and you just dont hear about it.
The sparkles wouldn't bother me, but the glossy surface would. I'm outside a lot with my notebook, so I really can't get the glossy screen

I genuinely have an issue with my WUXGA screen. The eye strain that it causes is totally unbearable and I can't configure it out using powerstrip.

Additionally, with all the yahoos out there trying to score an extra $150 from returns, customer service is bogged down, skeptical and truly ineffective.

I recieved my system on 5/18 noticed the extreme contrast in the first look and got a headache in the first twenty minutes. I immediately called dell for a replacement for the samsung display knowing that it has less color saturation.

Customer service refused to issue a call tag for the screen replacement at that level of detail. After 4 calls and around 14 hours on hold collectively over the course of a week, I got in touch with a tech support rep that understood my problem and had the willingness to swap out the LG LCD for a Samsung LCD.

After using the i9300 everyday for a week, my vision became blurry and somewhat nearsighted. I usually have 20/20 vision, however, prolonged eyestrain can cause this temporarily.

After waiting 10 days for the replacement to arrive, I called the tech service rep that processed my replacement and was assured that the system was built and shipped and that I should be recieving it any day. I waited another 6 days until I called customer support to get a tracking number. This service rep informed me that my replacement was cancelled and that a RMA was issued for the machine in my possesion.

My blood heated up and asked for a customer support supervisor, and was promptly told that none was available - yeah right. I called right back and got a customer service supervisor on the line and she was able to find my tracking number and informed me that the previous service rep was had given me bad information.

So the bottom line is that yes, there are issues with the screens and there are more issues with the customer service department.

If you buy a Dell, be prepared to spend a lot of time on the phone. You may get lucky and not have any problems with the machine, but if you do, it can be a long drawn out ride.

Sad, because the 9300 is a good machine, well built, quiet, fast, and a great value for the money. If the display was bearable and didn't strain my vision, I would say it is a great machine.

I don't think I will buy another Dell because of the terrible customer service.

I don't know maybe it's different genetics but I look at my screen 8 hours a day with no eye strain whatsoever.... I wear contacts as well because my vision is really poor...Maybe the real problem is some people need to go to the eye doctor and get theirs checked out. To each his own but I absolutly love the TrueLife screen best LCD I have ever looked at besided my PSP ... As far as Dell customer service they have been PERFECT for me. I emailed them because my system was in boxing for 3 day's and they upgraded my shipping to next day at no charge plus gave me $100 in free merchandise. Also I had no trouble canceling my system order 4-5 times because I found better coupons etc....Next, I had no problem getting a 5.4k hard drive sent out for free instead of a 4.2k because my online invoice said that is what I was getting. All four Dell customer service rep's I have spoken to have been kind, knowledgable, and courtious. That being said I used to work for Apple tech support and I KNOW quailty of service can vary greatly depending on the agent you get on the line. My best advice for you is if you get someone on the line who you don't believe is going to be able to satisfy your needs just simply call back untill you find one you like.
